HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite a three-run first inning, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team fell 6-4 to Gulf South Conference and No. 25 ranked Alabama Huntsville on the road on Sunday afternoon.
AUM drops two of three for the second consecutive GSC series and falls to 16-4 overall in 2021 with an 8-4 record in conference play. The Chargers improve to 14-7 with a 9-6 record inside GSC play.
The Warhawks touched for two home runs in the third game of the series.
Allie Miller launched her third career home run and second in as many days, while
Molly Cobb added her seventh home run of the season in the first inning.
AUM was able to get off to an electric start in the first inning, chasing the Chargers' started after recording just one out in the first inning.
Abby Krueger was able to tally the game's first run in the opening inning, dropping down a bunt that scored Miller to give the Warhawks a lead.
Cobb, the next batter, connected on her team-leading seventh home run of the season after Krueger's single, scoring the Warhawks' catcher and giving AUM a 3-0 lead to open the game.
UAH pitcher Kiara Akles was pulled after recording just one out. However, the UAH pitcher remained in the game as the designated player and came up with two runners on and deposited a ball over the left-field wall to tie the game at three.
The back-and-forth offense continued when Miller stepped up with two outs in the top of the second and connected on her second home run of the season, giving the Warhawks another lead heading into the bottom of the second.
After a single, a stolen base, and a walk, Warhawk starter
Alanna Goble was replaced by
Cydney Sizemore, who limited damage in the bottom of the second to just one run on a sacrifice fly sending the game tied at four into the third inning.
Sizemore was among many pitchers who settled into the contest after the second inning as neither side was able to get on the board until Akles launched her second home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth, securing a 6-4 lead for UAH.
The Warhawks had a chance to at least tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, getting two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Miller, Krueger, and Cobb were all unable to push across a run, resulting in a 6-4 win for the Chargers.
AUM will make a quick pitstop at the AUM Softball Complex on Tuesday, March 23, when they play host to Albany State in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
