Volleyball’s Season Ends In Four-Set Loss To UAH

HOOVER, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Semifinals to Alabama Huntsville on Wednesday afternoon, eliminating the Warhawks from contention.

AUM finishes their spring season with a 6-2 record, including a 4-1 record in Group B play and a 3-0 quarterfinal victory over Valdosta State. The Warhawks will now turn their attention to the upcoming fall season.

Mariane Cassiano (17), Nyah Whittlesey (16), and Giada Pais-Marden (15) led the charge for the Warhawks offensively against UAH and all shined at different moments throughout the match.

Meanwhile, junior setter Isadora Nicolai finished with 48 assists and 10 digs in the contest and was one of two players (Cassiano) to register a double-double in the loss.

The Warhawks jumped out to a quick start in the first set against UAH, taking a 3-1 and 5-4 lead over the Chargers early on. UAH, however, mounted an offensive attack that gave the Warhawks some trouble and took a 13-7 lead.

AUM fought back to cut the Alabama Huntsville lead to 19-18 thanks to a Maria Nicolau ace, but the Chargers proved too much to handle in the opening game, taking the first set 25-22 over the Orange & Black.

A Pais-Marden kill early in the second set gave AUM another short lead to begin a game at 6-4, and Kyla Ffrench helped extend that lead to 8-5 later in the first. UAH and AUM would go back and forth with each other in the middle stages of the second and played to a 16-16 tie.

Four straight points after a Ffrench kill gave the Chargers a 20-17 lead. The Warhawks were only able to muster one more kill in the dying moments of the second set, and fell to the Chargers 25-20.

AUM was able to find their offensive groove to begin the third set as they raced out to a 9-4 lead on the back of Cassiano. An attack error from Whittlesey cut the AUM lead down to 10-9, but the Orange & Black responded with four straight points to take a 14-9 advantage.

Despite points from UAH throughout the third set, AUM was able to keep their distance from the charging Chargers and, with their backs against the wall, pulled away from Alabama Huntsville for a 25-19 victory.

Excellent serving from Skylar Coppinger propelled AUM to a 6-3 lead to begin the fourth set. UAH answered the hot start from AUM with five-straight scores to take an 8-6 lead.

A Whittlesey kill was able to tie the match at 11 in the middle stages of the fourth. However, the Chargers answered with six of the next seven points to secure a five-point lead and used it to take the fourth set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
