JACKSON, TENN. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team extended its winning streak to 18 games after a 12-1 and 1-0 win on the road over Gulf South Conference foe Union on Saturday afternoon.
The Warhawks improve to 11-0 on the year with a perfect 5-0 record to start Gulf South Conference action. Union, meanwhile, slips to 2-14 on the year.
Gia Martin continued her stellar start to her collegiate career with an exceptional performance in game one. The freshman went 2-3 at the plate with a double and a three-run home run to cap off a three-RBI game.
In the circle,
Alanna Goble,
Brinkley Yevak and
Chanel Newcomer combined to hold Union to one run over two hits in the first game of the day.
Two batters into the game, the Warhawks had already netted a run on the board. The first pitch of the game hit
Allie Miller, who then stole second base. Senior backstop
Abby Krueger roped a double into left-center to give AUM a 1-0 lead.
Martin got her hot day started with a three-run bomb over the right center field wall to extend the Warhawks' lead to 4-0.
The Orange & Black were able to scratch across two more runs in the second inning on an RBI single from
Olivia Aycock and a sacrifice bunt RBI from Krueger to push the AUM lead to 6-0 after two innings of play.
The Warhawks answered a Union home run with a six-run fourth inning. Miller got the action started with an RBI single to center, allowing Aycock and
Parker Pinholster to score.
Molly Cobb netted an RBI later in the inning to give AUM a 9-1 advantage.
The scoring continued in the fourth with a pinch-hit solo home run from
Lauren Haskins and a two-run double from
Morgan Duschell to cement a 12-1 win for the Orange & Black.
A 13-run explosion in game one was met with an incredible pitcher's duel in game two. The two teams combined to record just five hits and one run in AUM's 1-0 victory in game two.
Bailie Barnes and Union's Gabby Morris were the stars in game two. Barnes spun all seven innings, allowing just three hits while netting two strikeouts, while Morris also went the distance, surrendering two hits and striking out six.
The only scoring of the game came from Martin when she connected on a solo shot over the right-field wall in the third inning to give the Warhawks all the offense they would need in the game.
Twice in game two did the Warhawks throw out a potential run at home plate. A broken single to right field from Union resulted in a Bulldog runner trying to score but was thrown out by Martin on a relay from right.
AUM had plenty of opportunities to push across more runs in the second contest of the doubleheader, leaving seven runners on base. However, Barnes kept the ball on the ground to keep Union off the board in a 1-0 win.
