Goble Fires No-Hitter, Bats Come Alive Late For Series Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore Alanna Goble fired the 14th no-hitter in Auburn University at Montgomery softball history in game one, setting the table for AUM to take the series sweep over Gulf South Conference foe Delta State.

With an 8-0 and 8-5 win over Delta State, the Warhawks improved to 26-5 on the year with a 16-5 mark in Gulf South action. The Lady Statesmen fall to 19-19 on the year with an 11-13 mark in GSC play.

Goble was nothing short of incredible in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, as she tied her career-high in strikeouts with 11 against the Lady Statesmen in game one. She held DSU hitless in all six innings to net the first no-hitter since April 2019.

AUM was able to push across eight runs despite only recording three hits in the game. Allie Miller, Abby Krueger, and Kathryn Fallen were the only Warhawks to net a hit.

Just like in game one, AUM was able to strike early in the first to set the table offensively. With two runners on in the first, the freshman Fallen singled to right to score Molly Cobb and Olivia Aycock to give AUM a 2-0 lead.

Kendall Tucker was able to lay down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Krueger on a safety squeeze play to score the game's third run. The scoring ended in the first for AUM when Fallen scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Both Delta State and AUM was able to settle into the game in the circle as both teams were held off the board until the fourth inning.

The senior catcher Krueger was able to score two more runs for the Orange & Black in the bottom of the fourth inning, roping a single up the middle, scoring Miller and Parker Pinholster to make it 6-0 in favor of the Warhawks.

With Goble's no-hitter in the balance, AUM was able to get to the run rule in the sixth inning, thanks to two wild pitches in the inning to beat Delta State 8-0, clinching the series victory for AUM.

Game two featured a back-and-forth offensive battle, something that is rare at the AUM Softball Complex in 2021. The Warhawks were able to get multi-hit efforts from Krueger, Fallen, Miller, and Aycock to secure the victory.

The defense for AUM ran into trouble in a scoreless third inning. With two away and a runner on second, Hannah Dailey dropped a popup in the infield, allowing the runner to score from second base. The 1-0 lead for DSU was the first time the Lady Statesmen had led in the series.

The next batter for Delta State laced a home run over the left-field wall to triple the Delta State lead, while the very next batter also hit a ball over the fence to shock the Warhawks and chase the starter Chanel Newcomer.

Brinkley Yevak was called upon to put out the fire but gave up a run of her own in the top of the fourth to run the Delta State lead to 5-0. Yevak was able to settle in after the fourth, earning her third win of the season.

The fifth inning provided some much-needed electricity at the AUM Softball Complex. The scoring started with a two-run single from Cobb, scoring Miller and Pinholster.

Krueger was able to bring home Cobb from first base with a double that snuck past the center fielder's glove. The next batter, Fallen, was able to launch a home run that barely cleared the center-field fence, tying the game at five.

Two batters later, Tucker hit a ball labeled for the Christmas tree over the left-field wall for her second home run of the season, giving AUM a 6-5 lead over Delta State. A bunt single from Krueger added the seventh run for AUM, while a Fallen single scored Lauren Haskins from second to solidify the 8-0 victory.

Bailie Barnes came into the game in the sixth inning and earned the two-out save for her second save of the season.

AUM will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to Peach Belt foe Georgia Southwestern State. The action from the AUM Softball Complex will begin at 2 p.m.
