CLINTON, Miss. – For the first time in program history, the No. 23-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team has clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference postseason after a pair of wins against GSC foe Mississippi College.
The Warhawks, after a 9-3 and 5-2 win over MC, bring their record to 28-5 on the year with an 18-5 record inside Gulf South action. Head coach Eric Newel now needs five more wins for his 500
th career victory.
AUM used the long ball to take the series opener against Mississippi College, as
Jaycie Walker was able to connect on two big flies, while freshman catcher
Margaret Morgan launched her first-career home run in her first start.
Cydney Sizemore was excellent in relief of
Bailie Barnes in game one, going four innings out of the bullpen. She allowed just one hit and struck out five Lady Choctaws in the come from behind victory.
Mississippi College was the benefactor of some early offense in the first game as they were able to limit potential damage from AUM in the first two innings, and capitalized with a big bottom of the third.
The Lady Choctaws had the bases loaded, and nobody out in the third inning and were able to capitalize on some shaky AUM defense. After taking the lead on an RBI single, MC added another run on a ball hit to the second basemen, who opted to throw home but was not able to get the runner in time.
Mississippi College's offense in the third ended with a groundout to the first basemen
Molly Cobb, who took the out in exchange for the game's third run, giving MC a 3-0 lead over the Warhawks going into the fourth.
With
Lauren Haskins standing on first base, Morgan stepped up in her second plate appearance and launched her first-career home run over the fence to give AUM some life while cutting the Lady Choctaws' lead to 3-2.
Walker connected on her first home run of the game in the top of the fifth to give the Warhawks their first lead of the game after bringing home
Parker Pinholster on the two-run shot.
The scoring continued for AUM in the sixth when a Pinholster single brought home
Hannah Dailey from third. Walker was then able to hit her second home run of the game, scoring Pinholster again to give AUM a 7-3 lead.
The Warhawks were able to add two insurance runs in the seventh.
Gia Martin was able to score on a throwing error while
Olivia Aycock brought home Morgan on an RBI groundout to give AUM their 9-3 win.
Game two was controlled by the Warhawks from the start as a three-hit game from
Kendall Tucker gave AUM the confidence they needed to sweep the doubleheader.
Alanna Goble earned her 10
th win of the season, going 5.1 innings, while
Brinkley Yevak netted her second save of the year.
The Warhawks scored first in the opening inning thanks to
Allie Miller's ability to get to third base without requiring a hit from a teammate. Aycock was able to drive in the junior to give Goble and the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
Aycock, in the second inning, was able to get herself caught between first and second, allowing Martin a chance to cross the plate before being tagged out to double the AUM lead after two innings of play.
Walker continued her fantastic day in the fifth inning, lacing a single through the left side, bringing home Aycock for the game's third run.
Later in the inning, Pinholster drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch to score Walker. The next batter, Martin, was also able to draw a walk, scoring Tucker and giving AUM a 5-0 lead.
The Lady Choctaws were able to load the bases in the bottom of the sixth and capitalized on their efforts to cut the AUM lead to 5-2.
Yevak, however, was able to secure the victory for the Warhawks with a play at the plate, giving AUM a 5-2 victory over MC and a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Choctaws.
