#23 Softball Clinches Series Sweep With 7-1 Win

CLINTON, Miss. – The No. 23-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used three first-inning home runs to clinch a 7-1 victory and a series sweep over Gulf South Conference foe Mississippi College on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Warhawks maintain their grip on second place in the GSC and stand with a 19-5 record in conference action and a 29-5 mark overall. AUM has also won its last nine games, marking the second time this season they have won at least nine contests in a row.

The Warhawks got three home runs in the first inning as Molly Cobb, Parker Pinholster, and Jaycie Walker were all able to clear the bases with home runs. Cobb and Pinholster were the lone Warhawks to net multi-RBI contests.

Cydney Sizemore earned her second win of the series in game three, going three strong innings in relief of Alanna Goble.

Allie Miller once again set the table in the first inning for the Orange & Black, reaching on an error and advancing to second on an error. However, the error would prove costly for the Lady Choctaws, as Cobb launched her 10th home run of the season to give AUM a 2-0 lead.

The next batter, Walker, with a 2-1 count, ripped a home run to centerfield to give the Warhawks a three-run advantage. The home run also chased the Mississippi College starter after recording just one out in the first.

After a single from Kendall Tucker, Pinholster stepped up and continued the hit parade in the first inning. The senior outfielder tallied a home run over the centerfield wall to give AUM a 5-0 lead after one inning of play.

Mississippi College was able to get a run in the bottom of the first off Goble, but their offense was later erased in the third inning.

Gia Martin was able to tack on an RBI in the top of the third, scoring Tucker on a single to right field and taking second on the throw. The extra-base proved noteworthy later in the inning when Margaret Morgan singled to bring home the freshman Martin, giving AUM the 7-1 lead.

The Warhawks will conclude the home schedule of the 2021 regular season when they play host to GSC rival Montevallo on Friday, April 23. The opening game of the three-game series is set to begin at 6 p.m. from the AUM Softball Complex.
