MONTGOMERY, Ala. – On a day where seven seniors were honored, the 19
th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team defeated Gulf South Conference rival Montevallo 3-1 and 5-3 to record the doubleheader sweep.
The Warhawks maintain second place in the GSC after the two victories and improve their conference record to 21-5 while bringing their 2021 record to 31-5. Montevallo, meanwhile, falls to 10
th in the conference with a 10-16 record.
Bailie Barnes was great again in the circle for the Warhawks, going the distance while allowing just one run on four hits. The senior recorded eight strikeouts and won her 10
th game of the season, and now sits at 10-2.
Kendall Tucker had a key two-run home run in the sixth inning for her third home run of the season.
After Barnes stranded two Falcons on base to end the top of the first,
Allie Miller tripled to right-center to begin AUM's offensive attack. The next batter,
Olivia Aycock, was able to bring her home on an RBI groundout to give Barnes and the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks had chances to extend their lead in the second inning, but Montevallo was able to squander any potential offense, keeping the game at 1-0 through the middle innings.
Barnes would go on to retire 11 batters straight through the middle innings. She netted eight total strikeouts, and a tapper back to the pitcher in the top of the sixth ended her retired batter streak.
A one-out single from
Jaycie Walker ended a dry spell offensively for AUM. The senior was able to advance to third after the ball skipped past the centerfielder. Tucker made sure that the Montevallo error did not matter, as hit a screaming line drive over the left-field wall to give AUM a 3-0 lead.
A solo home run with one out in the seventh was the only offense for the Falcons as Barnes was able to close out the game and grab the win for AUM in the first game of the series.
Tucker had another great game in the second meeting between the two teams, going 2-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
The Warhawks, again, got started early in game two against Montevallo. After a walk and a wild pitch, Aycock found herself on second base, allowing
Molly Cobb to drive home the game's first run.
A Walker single put two runners on base for Tucker, who roped a double into left field to score a run and give AUM a 2-0 lead after an inning of play.
Starter
Alanna Goble settled in quickly for the Warhawks, throwing three-consecutive scoreless frames to begin game two.
A walk and a hit batter put two runners on base for AUM in the bottom of the third. After a flyout, Tucker came up and roped a two-run double to give her three RBIs on the day and the Warhawks a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons were able to get two runs back on a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, which would be Goble's last inning.
Montevallo was able to cut the lead down to one with another solo homer off of
Cydney Sizemore, but a pinch-hit solo shot from
Kathryn Fallen gave AUM and closer
Brinkley Yevak an insurance run to give the Warhawks a 5-3 win.
The Warhawks are scheduled to conclude the three-game series with the Falcons tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the AUM Softball Complex.
