Warhawks Earn Narrow 3-0 Victory In Series Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In their first home game since March 13, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team defeated Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia 3-0 on Friday night, securing the 20th win of the season.

AUM sees their record climb to 20-4 on the season with a 12-4 record in GSC action. The Wolves, meanwhile, drop to 16-7 with an identical 12-4 record in GSC play and are tied with the Warhawks for second place.

Just three Warhawks were able to register a hit in the first game of the series, but Morgan Duschell, Olivia Aycock, and Allie Miller were all able to register a two-hit night.

Bailie Barnes and Chanel Newcomer dazzled in the opener against West Georgia, as they combined to allow just four hits while striking out seven Wolves in the shutout win.

The Warhawks and Barnes ran into some trouble in the early innings as the Wolves were able to get two runners on base in the first two innings. However, Barnes was able to dance around the danger to keep West Georgia off the board through three innings.

AUM's offense was held at bay through the first three innings as the West Georgia starter had faced the minimum through the first time through the Warhawks' lineup.

The offense started to click, however, in the top of the fourth when Miller roped a triple into the right-center field game to leadoff the inning. The Warhawk shortstop took advantage of Miller's hit, securing the game's first run with an RBI into left field to put AUM up 1-0.

Newcomer came in to relieve Barnes after the fourth inning and retired the first six batters she faced with relative ease, keeping the game at 1-0 in favor of AUM.

A leadoff single, followed by a stolen base and an error from Miller, put AUM in a position to add some insurance runs late in the game. Similar to the fourth inning, Aycock was able to plate Miller on a base hit to double the Warhawks' lead.

Later in the inning, Duschell laced a ball over the left fielder's head and found herself at third base, scoring the pinch-runner Gracie Harris from first base.

A leadoff double from West Georgia was not enough to mount a comeback, as Newcomer was able to net two strikeouts and a pop-out to secure a 3-0 victory for the Warhawks in game one.

Games two and three between these two teams from the AUM Softball Complex are scheduled to begin tomorrow at 1 p.m.
