LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team completed a series sweep over West Alabama with their 4-2 win on Sunday, May 2 while notching their 15th-consecutive win.
With the victory, AUM closes out the regular season with a record of 35-5, marking for their fewest regular-season losses since the 2016 season. The Warhawks finish 2021 with a record of 25-5 in Gulf South Conference play, good enough to clinch a share of the GSC regular-season title and the top spot in the upcoming GSC Postseason Tournament.
Kendall Tucker and
Allie Miller both led AUM with a pair of hits on the day, with Tucker driving in a team-high two runs and Miller adding a run scored.
Molly Cobb and
Gia Martin both drove in a run while
Kathryn Fallen logged both a run and a hit.
Abby Krueger, Fallen, Martin, and Tucker all swiped a bag for AUM on Sunday.
Brinkley Yevak (4-0) earned the win in relief. Yevak allowed just one run over 3.1 innings after relieving starter
Bailie Barnes, who surrendered just one earned over the first two innings.
Alanna Goble (2) recorded the game's final five outs to grab her second save of the season.
West Alabama tallied the game's first run in inning number one, taking advantage of a pair of leadoff hits followed by a sac bunt and an RBI ground out to grab an early 1-0 lead.
AUM responded their next time up in the top of the second with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. Tucker brought home the inning's first run on a safety-squeeze bunt, followed by an RBI knock from Martin one batter later.
The Warhawks would go on to add two more runs in the game, getting an RBI sac fly from Cobb in the third and an RBI single from Tucker in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead.
West Alabama would add another run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run and brought the tying run to the plate one batter later on a one-out walk. Goble would enter the game and make quick work of the Tigers in the sixth, however, to escape the jam and keep AUM up 4-2.
The Tigers knocked a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh to make things interesting, but Goble would bear down and induce a pair of fly-ball outs to end the contest.
AUM batted .320 (8-25) on the day, including a mark of .300 (3-10) with runners on and a clip of .429 (3-7) with runners in scoring position. Despite being outhit by the Tigers, the AUM pitching staff held UWA to just a .091 (1-11) batting average with runners in scoring position and stranded eight Tiger baserunners.
The Warhawks will be back in action for round one of the GSC Postseason Tournament on Thursday, May 6 in Oxford, Ala. against the University of Montevallo at 12:30 p.m.
