#4 Warhawks Capture First-Round Victory Over Montevallo 4-1

OXFORD, Ala. – The top-seeded and No. 4 nationally-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team defeated rival Montevallo 4-1 in the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament. This is the first time AUM has won a GSC postseason game.

The Warhawks move on to face fifth-seeded West Georgia in the second round later tonight, beginning at 6 p.m. This is also the fourth win over Montevallo this season.

Allie Miller was one of the heroes of the first-round battle with the Falcons, going 2-3 at the plate with a three-run double that gave the Warhawks a three-run lead.

Bailie Barnes earned the game-one start and was excellent for the Orange & Black. She spun seven complete innings, allowing just six hits, one run, and struck out five batters to win her 13th game of the season.

The Warhawks had an opportunity to start off on the right foot in the first inning as Miller and Olivia Aycock were able to draw back-to-back walks to begin the bottom of the first. However, two popouts and a strikeout left the Warhawks without a run after one inning of play.

Montevallo struck first in the top of the second, and the Falcons launched a home run over the left-field wall to take an early 1-0 lead. AUM, however, struck back in the bottom of the inning when Kathryn Fallen tattooed a ball over the left center field wall.

AUM had two runners on again in the third but was unable to cash in as both starters settled in momentarily in the early innings.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Miller came up looking to do some damage. She took the first pitch she saw and laced it down the left-field line, scoring three runners while giving AUM a three-run lead.

Montevallo threatened with two hits in the top of the sixth, but Barnes settled in and kept the Falcons off the board for the remainder of the game, securing a 4-1 win for AUM.

The second round between AUM and West Georgia is set to begin at 6 p.m. from Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala.
