Women’s Soccer Grinds out 1-0 Victory at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. – Stingy goalkeeping from Karla Gaytan, combined with a 75th-minute goal from freshman Sydney Garth, propelled the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team to a 1-0 win at Newberry College on Friday, Sept. 10.

With the win, AUM's record improves to 1-1 on the season. The victory additionally avenges a 2019 loss to the Wolves and brings the Warhawks' all-time record against Newberry to 1-1.

Garth's game-winner was one of two shots on goal from the Enterprise, Ala. native on the night, a game-high for either team. Mayson Jaindl took a game-high six shots while Michaelyn Manning added five shots with two on frame.

"Tonight was a great team performance on the road to get our first win," Head Coach Julianne Herrity said. "We were able to get some key contributions from our freshmen while also keeping a clean sheet."

AUM outshot Newberry 18-16 on the night, with 10 shots in the first half and eight in the second. Both teams accounted for six shots on goal.

In goal, Gaytan bolstered her 2021 record to 1-1-0 with the win. The junior netminder accounted for six critical saves en route to picking up her first career shutout for the Warhawks.

The women's soccer team faces a quick turnaround, with a Sunday, Sept. 12 contest at Lander University up next. Kickoff from Greenwood, S.C. is set for 12:00 p.m. (CST).
