Warhawks Split Final Day Of Shark Invitational

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team ended the Shark Invitational going 1-1 on Saturday after a 3-2 loss to the University of Findlay and a 3-0 win over Dominican College.

The Warhawks snapped their three-game losing streak with a win over the Chargers in game two, bringing their season record to 5-3 after two weekends of action.

The middles stood out in the first game against the Oilers, as the Warhawks were able to expose Findlay and find success at the net. Maria Nicolau and Ylenia De Mango were among the group of Warhawks to net at least 10 kills, while senior Nyah Whittlesey led the way with 13.
Senior setter Isadora Nicolai once again eclipsed the 40-set total, netting 40 helpers in the loss in game one.

The first set was totally dominated by the Warhawks. After Findlay put an end to a 4-0 run by AUM to put the Warhawks up 8-4, AUM rattled off six more points to extend their advantage to 14-5 after a Carla Butler ace. AUM was able to ride that momentum to the end of the first set, winning 25-16.

Set two saw Findlay race out to a slight advantage through the middle portions of the set. With Findlay holding a 13-9 lead, a block from Nicolau sparked a 7-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Oilers, however, would close the set by capturing 10 of the next 13 points to even the match at 1-1.

AUM was able to stay close to Findlay in the third set after falling behind early 5-1. Four straight from the Warhawks tied the match at five, but the Warhawks were not able to string together more than two points in a row until the dying moments of the third set and ultimately lost 25-18.

The Oilers and the Warhawks split the first 18 points to begin set four, resulting in a 9-9 tied early in the set. AUM would take five of the next six points to take a 14-10 lead, thanks to kills from De Mango and Whittlesey. Findlay fought back to cut the lead to one, but AUM finished by taking six of the last seven points to take the fourth set 25-19 and force a deciding fifth set.

Set five got off to an inauspicious start for the Orange & Black as they found themselves down 4-1 early. However, AUM was able to rebound by taking a 5-4 lead over the Oilers. The two sides would trade points back and forth, with the Warhawks having an eventual match point at 16-15, but Findlay ended the match by taking three consecutive points.

The Warhawks in game two dominated the match in nearly every category. Butler led the way in kills with 10, while Nicolai was able to notch a double-double in the contest, recording 26 assists and 10 digs.

Set one was not even close as the Warhawks held Dominican College to just nine points which marked the lowest amount of points given up in a single set in program history. The Warhawks rolled through the Chargers, winning 25-9.

The Chargers were able to push back in the second set, even after falling down 4-0. Dominican College was able to take a 7-5 lead over the Warhawks and would push it as far out as 18-12. AUM, however, finished the second set by taking 13 of the next 15 points to win the second set 25-20.

Like the first set, AUM controlled the tempo and the scoring over the Chargers. After jumping out to an 11-2 lead, the Warhawks ran away with the match and ended their three-game skid with a 25-11 set three win.

The Warhawks will head to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to take part in the Reddie-Tiger Invitational next weekend when they open up with the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Henderson State on Friday, September 17 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
