Men's Soccer Edges Montevallo 2-1, Awaits Final GSC Tournament Seeding

MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Logan Roach's penalty kick goal in the 31st minute handed the Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team a 2-0 lead in the first half, and the Warhawks were able to do enough to hold off the University of Montevallo in the second half to secure a 2-1 win over the Falcons.

The three points earned in the road win help AUM to solidify a berth in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. Seeding is yet to be determined with one final GSC match to be played on Tuesday, but the Warhawks can finish no worse than the fifth seed.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • AUM jumped onto the scoreboard first after an own goal by Montevallo in the 12th minute.
  • Landon Surratt's throw-in rocketed toward the net, glanced off the hand of the keeper, and the Warhawks led 1-0.
  • A handful of shots were mostly harmless from either side until the Warhawks earned a penalty kick.
  • Falcon goalkeeper Salvador Plaza committed a foul that led to a penalty kick, and Logan Roach calmly stepped up to the spot and nailed the kick to put the Warhawks on top 2-0 in the 31st minute. 
  • Montevallo's Edorta Cabieces Sanz converted on a penalty kick in the 66th minute to pull the home team within a goal heading into the final third of the match.
  • The Falcons found a pair of shots in the final 20 minutes, but both failed to find their target as AUM walked away with the hard-fought three points on the road.
  • Montevallo out-shot AUM 12-9 in the match, and Plaza had to make five saves to Alexander Karus' two saves.

  • The goal marked the first of the season for Roach.
  • AUM improved to 4-1-2 on the road, including a 3-1-1 mark on the road in GSC play.

"I am very proud of the lads," said head coach Matthew Thorne. "Montevallo is one of the strongest sides in the region. Our lads started the game very well and had to fight for each other every minute of the match tonight."

UP NEXT

The Warhawks await the result of a match between Montevallo and Delta State on Tuesday, Oct. 25 to determine their seed in the upcoming Gulf South Conference tournament. If the Falcons tie or lose the match, AUM will host a first-round tournament game. If Montevallo wins, the Warhawks will go on the road to open the 2022 GSC tourney.
