Volleyball Defeats Shorter in Five Set Thriller

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team won a Gulf South Conference matchup 3-2 against Shorter University on Saturday afternoon inside the AUM Athletics Complex. 
 
Kendall McCain led the way for the Warhawks tallying 21.5 points and had 21 kills. Amber Bretwisch had 29 assist and six digs. Reann Cato had 17 digs.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shorter held an 18-17 lead in the first set and the Warhawks rolled off eight straight points to claim the set 25-18. 
  • Shorter bounced back and won the second set 25-21. The set was tied 14-14 and Shorter held the lead for the rest of the set to tie the match 1-1. 
  • The Warhawks trailed 4-2 in the third set and scored eight straight points to have a 10-4 lead. The Warhawks lead 23-12 and went on a 9-0 run to bring the score to 23-21 and the Warhawks scored back-to-back points to claim the third set 25-21. 
  • The Hawks dominated the fourth set 25-9 and finished the set with an 11-1 run to tie the match 2-2. 
  • AUM led 11-7 in the fifth set and Shorter rallied to tie the set at 13-13. The Warhawks scored two points in a row to close the set at 15-13 and win the match 3-2. 
STATS OF THE MATCH
  • Shorter outscored AUM 77-68 in the entire match. 
  • The Warhawks tallied 54 kills in the conference match. 
  • The Warhawks had a hitting percentage of .182. 
  • Ylenia De Mango had 12 kills and four digs. She scored 14.5 points.  
  • Bretwisch and Savannah Sebek had 45 assists together.  
  • De Mango had a hitting percentage of .423. 
  • Alessia Cappai had 20.5 points and 16 kills.

"We struggled passing today which is a skill that can have a negative impact on your hitting," head volleyball coach Flavia Siqueira said. "I was thrilled that our players were able to come in the fifth set with a strong mentality after getting beat pretty badly in the fourth set."
