Volleyball Advances to GSC Semifinals For First Time in School History

PENSACOLA, Fla. -  For the first time in school history, the No. 7 seed Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team has advanced to the Gulf South Conference Championships semifinals after knocking off the No. 3 seed Mississippi College 3-2. .  
 
The Warhawks were led by Ylenia De Mango who got 16 kills on 38 total attacks. Alessia Cappai followed with 14 kills.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Warhawks came out on fire in the first set to take a 9-4 lead. The Choctaws rallied a 7-2 run and pushed to take the first set win 25-20. 
  • The second set saw AUM jumping to a 9-3 lead and felt like the first set. MC got on a run and retook the lead at 15-11. The Warhawks chipped away at the lead and they took a 21-20 lead. The Warhawks scored four of the next six points to win set two 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1. 
  • Auburn Montgomery jumped to a 6-3 lead and took control of the third set. The Warhawks held a 16-10 lead and MC cut the lead in half, but AUM held on strong. The Warhawks won the third set 25-22 and took a 2-1 lead.
  • MC held control of the fourth set and used a couple of 3-0 runs and had a 20-18 lead. The Warhawks did not quit and after a couple of kills by Giulia Santuari, the Warhawks had a 21-20 lead. MC finished the fourth set on a 5-0 run and tied the match at 2-2. 
  • The fifth set saw AUM jumping to a 4-0 lead and MC bounced back to tie the set at 5-5. After alternating points, MC used a 4-0 run and held a 9-6 lead. 
  • AUM got down 11-14 in the fifth set and a couple of kills and an attack error got the Warhawks right back in it. The two teams alternated points and eventually AUM scored two in a row and won the set 20-18 and match 3-2.

"I cannot express how happy and proud we are of our players," head volleyball coach Flavia Siqueira said. "If you asked me what happened today, I would say we believed. They played with a lot of heart and determination. Happy to say that made history today." 

UP NEXT

The No. 6-seeded Warhawks advance to the GSC semifinals and take on Union University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the UWF Field House.
