#11 Warhawks Split First Day Of Red-White-Blue Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The 11th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team split the first day of the Red-White-Blue Classic with a 10-8 win over Columbus State before falling in the final game of the day 3-1 to Georgia College.

The Warhawks now stand at 6-3 on the year after going 1-1 on Saturday. AUM is now 4-2 in neutral site games and 2-1 in games played away from the AUM Softball Complex.

Game one of the day featured an offensive outpouring by both teams. Haley Ann Frank and Gia Martin netted multi-hit efforts against the Cougars. Martin drove in three of AUM's 10 runs, while newcomer Chloe Derrick and Kat Fallen added two RBIs of their own.

AUM struck first against Columbus State, scoring two runs in the opening inning. With Frank on third base in the first, Derrick was able to score the freshman after an RBI groundout to the first basemen. The Warhawks' scoring in the first ended when Martin scored from third after an error from the third baseman.

The Cougars, however, responded with two runs of their own in the Columbus State half of the first inning. Two RBI singles into left field plated both of the Columbus State runs off of starter Morgan Ferguson.

The Warhawks responded in a big way in the second inning, scoring three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Martin opened the scoring with an RBI single to score Lexi Love. Meanwhile, a sacrifice fly from Derrick scored Frank, and a stolen base from Martin allowed senior shortstop Olivia Aycock to score from third base.

Columbus State would come back to take the lead over the Warhawks in the bottom of the fourth inning. An RBI walk with the bases loaded began the scoring for the Cougars in the fourth, while an RBI double and an error from Alex Howard allowed CSU to take a 6-5 lead over AUM.

In the top of the sixth, Martin recorded her third RBI of the game with a two-run double to left field to put AUM up by two runs after Frank scored Shelby Edgeworth with an RBI single. Fallen would add a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give AUM a 10-6 advantage.

Avery Dickerson was tasked to come in relief of Brinkley Yevak and threw 2.2 effective innings to earn her first career win. However, it was Hannah Creel who came in and saved the day for the Warhawks, recording three outs in the seventh to limit the damage and give AUM a 10-6 win.

AUM's offense struggled in game two against the Bobcats, as the Warhawks were able to mount just four hits against Georgia College. Derrick was able to record two hits and a run scored in the loss to the Bobcats.

The Georgia College offense broke out in the first inning and provided all the run support starter Macy Banks needed. With the bases loaded in the first off of AUM starter Alanna Goble, Bobcat first baseman Jessica Owen seared a double into centerfield to put GC up 2-0. A sacrifice fly put Georgia College up by three after the first inning.

Newcomer Lexie Bullock secured the lone run for the Warhawks with an RBI single into left field to score Derrick from third base. AUM would leave two runners on base in the top of the sixth, but Derrick would strike out swinging with runners on first and second to end the threat.

Goble settled in after a rocky first inning and would throw all six innings for the Warhawks. She surrendered nine hits, allowing three runs while striking out four.

The Warhawks will conclude the Columbus State tournament tomorrow afternoon when they will face Georgia College and Columbus State again on Sunday. AUM will play the Bobcats at 2:30 p.m. before facing Columbus State at 4:45.
