#12 Warhawks Take Two From Georgia Southwestern

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 12th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team swept Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia Southwestern 6-4 and 7-2 on Tuesday to open AUM's 2022 home schedule.

The Warhawks have now won seven straight games and move to 13-3 on the year. The Hurricanes suffer two losses on the day to put them at 10-8 in 2022.

Game one saw the Warhawks trailing the Hurricanes through two innings, but Alex Howard broke the tie with a grand slam in the bottom of the third for her first home run of the season. Kat Fallen also had a breakout game one, going 3-3 at the plate.

Freshman arm Avery Dickerson was superb in relief of Warhawk starter Alanna Goble, throwing 5.2 innings of scoreless softball to earn her third win of the season.

It was Georgia Southwestern who found an early lead in game one after a pair of miscues by the AUM defense. After a walk and two errors, an RBI double from Katelyn Wood put the Hurricanes up 2-0 before AUM came to the plate for the first time.

The Warhawks were threatening in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded and one out, newcomer Shelby Newsome was able to lift a ball into the outfield to score AUM's first run. The Warhawks, however, would leave to on base in the first.

Georgia Southwestern responded in the top of the second to distance themselves from the Warhawks. An RBI walk with the bases loaded plated the third run of the game for the Hurricanes, and an RBI single added the fourth run of the game to place the GSW lead at 4-1.

Recent NFCA National Player of The Week Chloe Derrick converted on an RBI bunt single to score Olivia Aycock in the bottom of the third, then four batters later, Howard stepped up and tucked a moonshot over the left-field wall to put AUM ahead 6-4.

The Warhawks ran into trouble in the top of the seventh, as the Hurricanes had the bases loaded with two outs. Brinkley Yevak was called upon to get the final out of the contest and got the Hurricanes' leadoff hitter to groundout to short to collect Yevak's second save of the season.

Haley Ann Frank shined in game two for AUM out of the leadoff spot. She went 3-4 in game two and scored two of the Warhawks' seven runs. Newcomer Morgan Ferguson netted her seventh win of the season after throwing 4.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Gia Martin connected on her 30th RBI of the season in the bottom of the first in game two, lifting a fly ball to deep left-center field to score Frank from third base, giving the Warhawks a 1-0 early lead.

It wasn't until the third inning that Georgia Southwestern responded, as cleanup hitter Zoe Willis laced a two-run single up the middle to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.

The Warhawk offense was held at bay after the first inning, as the scoring stopped for AUM until Martin netted her second sac fly of the day to tie the game. Moments later, senior shortstop Olivia Aycock scored on a wild pitch to give AUM the lead.

AUM wasn't done scoring in the fifth inning, as Fallen was inches away from a home run, but found her ball hit off the top of the wall to score Derrick and Aycock, pushing the Warhawks' lead to 5-2.

AUM was able to add a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Aycock reached base after a dropped fly ball in the outfield, letting Newsome score from third. Meanwhile, later in the inning, the Hurricane's second baseman would drop a popup in the infield, allowing Aycock to score AUM's seventh run.

After a brief stint at the AUM Softball Complex, the nationally-ranked Warhawks will hit the road for a Gulf South Conference series against Lee University. The action from Cleveland, Tennessee, is scheduled to begin on Saturday, March 5, at noon.
