Clutch Hitting Powers #17 Warhawks To Doubleheader Sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. A walk-off home run in game one and a complete-game shutout as the 17th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team won both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader against Mississippi College.

After two wins today, the Warhawks improve their 2022 record to 16-5 and a 6-2 record in GSC play. Mississippi College, meanwhile, drops to 11-8 overall with a 4-4 record in conference action.

Game one saw the Warhawks take a 4-3 victory over Mississippi College. Kat Fallen, Margaret Morgan, and Shelby Newsome all launched home runs in the game one win. Morgan Ferguson threw six innings, allowing three runs, while Avery Dickerson picked up her fourth win of the season after a scoreless inning of relief.

Mississippi College jumped on the board early against the Warhawks, as a two-run home run with one away in the first inning put the Lady Choctaws up by two in the first inning. Fallen was able to answer in the bottom half of the following inning with a home run to right field to run the score to 2-1.

Ferguson and the Mississippi College starter Avery Barnett settled in after an entertaining two innings as the two sides would be held off the board until the seventh inning when Mississippi College's Mallory Little added a solo home run.

A dramatic seventh inning started after a pinch-hit, two-out single from Alex Howard to extend the inning. On a 1-2 count and the Warhawks down to their final strike, Newsome launched a line-drive home run over the left-centerfield wall to tie the game at three.

Morgan was able to come in as the next batter, pinch hitting for Lexie Bullock, and launched a walk-off home run over the centerfield fence to give the Warhawks a 4-3 game one win over Mississippi College.

The Warhawks were able to be more efficient in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning to secure the win. Alanna Goble went the distance for her second win of the season, throwing seven shutout innings to take the victory.

Newsome started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning for AUM, as the Choctaw first basemen had trouble reading the ball off the bat, and Newsome found herself with an RBI single to give AUM a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Olivia Aycock singled up the middle to bring Newsome in from second base to give the Warhawks both of the runs they needed to take game two over Mississippi College.

Mississippi College would leave the bases loaded in the top of the second against AUM, but Goble was able to minimize the damage done on the bases all game. The Choctaws would leave game two, having stranded five runners on base.

AUM and Mississippi College will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from the AUM Softball Complex is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
