Cobb’s Late Homer Carries #17 Softball To Series Sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A two-run home run in the sixth inning from junior Molly Cobb lifted the 17th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team to a 4-2 win over Gul South Conference foe Mississippi College on Monday afternoon.

The Warhawks sweep the series against the Choctaws and now stand at 17-5 on the year with a 7-2 record in Gulf South Conference play. Mississippi College drops to 11-9 on the year with a 4-5 record in conference action.

Cobb had the big hit late in the game against the Choctaws and finished game three going 1-3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman Chloe Derrick had the only multi-hit game for AUM, going 2-2 at the plate with an RBI.

Hannah Creel got the start against her former team, going 4.2 innings. She allowed seven hits, one earned run, and struck out four batters in her no-decision. Creel won 23 games for Mississippi College from 2016 to 2018.

The Warhawks started the scoring in game three against Mississippi College in the bottom of the third. Kat Fallen was able to connect on a single up the middle to score Cobb from second base. Fallen would take second on the throw home, allowing Derrick to drive in Gia Martin from third to give AUM a 2-0 lead after three innings.

With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, the Choctaws were able to get a run back when Derrick traded a run for an out at third base. Mississippi College would tie the game at two in the top of the fifth after McCall Lee laced a single into centerfield to bring in the Choctaws' second run.

After Avery Dickerson stranded two runners on in the top of the sixth, Cobb came to the plate with two outs and Faith Wheat on third base. The junior all-American launched an opposite-field two-run home run to give the Warhawks the 4-2 lead to win the game.

The Warhawks will now turn their attention to a three-game rivalry series with 23rd-ranked Alabama Huntsville. AUM will face the Chargers starting on Saturday, March 19, with a doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
