#16 Softball Drops Series Opener To #24 UAH 5-2

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A four-run top of the fifth inning from the 24th-ranked Chargers sent the 16th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team to a series-opening 5-2 loss at the AUM Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks fall to 17-6 on the season and now stand at 7-3 in Gulf South Conference play. Alabama Huntsville pulls their record to 16-7 in 2022 with a 6-4 mark in GSC action.

Molly Cobb and Kat Fallen netted two-hit games for the Warhawks as Fallen was able to double twice while adding an RBI.

The Warhawks jumped on top early against the rival Chargers, as Cobb and Fallen traded doubles to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. Entering today's game, the Warhawks were undefeated when scoring the game's first run.

Alabama Huntsville was able to produce hard contact against the Warhawks' starting pitcher Morgan Ferguson, but the freshman was able to keep the Chargers in check through her first four innings of the game.

It wasn't until the fifth inning that Alabama Huntsville could get on the board. After UAH converted on an RBI single to score their first run, reliever Avery Dickerson came in and walked her first batter with the bases loaded to score UAH's second run of the afternoon.

The next Charger batter was able to ring a line drive up the middle to score two more runs to put Alabama Huntsville ahead of AUM for the first time in the game. The Warhawks, however, were able to answer in the bottom of the fifth after a Cobb single scored Olivia Aycock from second base to run the score to 4-2.

UAH was able to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh off of Dickerson as Laura Harbin was able to work a 10-pitch pinch-hit at-bat. On the 10th offering from Dickerson, Harbin connected on a home run over the left-field fence to secure the Chargers' 5-2 win.

The Warhawks and Chargers will do battle again tomorrow afternoon as the two sides will wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. from the AUM Softball Complex.
