#16 Softball’s Bats Breakout In Doubleheader Sweep Of #24 UAH

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 16th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used the long ball to secure two wins over Gulf South Conference foe Alabama Huntsville on Sunday afternoon, winning 7-3 and 10-2 to grab the series victory.

The Warhawks move to 19-6 on the year and fly to 9-3 in Gulf South Conference action. The Warhawks also move to 7-1 at home this season. The Chargers' overall record drops to 16-9 with an even 6-6 mark in GSC action.

Alanna Goble was great once again in the circle for AUM, as she built off last week's performance against Mississippi College. The junior arm threw all seven innings for AUM, allowing just three runs while striking out four batters.

Kat Fallen led the Warhawks offensively in game one, going 2-4 at the plate with a three-run home run in the third inning. Senior shortstop Olivia Aycock also had a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a run scored.

The Warhawks found themselves down early in game one against Alabama Huntsville as a leadoff double set the table for the Chargers to drive in the game's first run after Kiara Akles singled to right field.

AUM responded a few innings later, as Shelby Newsome and Aycock set the table for the sophomore slugger Fallen, who deposited a ball over the centerfield wall to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead over Alabama Huntsville.

Gia Martin was able to break out of her funk at the plate later on in the inning, singling down the right-field line to score Molly Cobb to provide the Warhawks with a three-run lead.

Akles continued her great series at the dish in the top of the fifth inning as she added two more RBIs to her total after doubling over the centerfielder's head to put the Chargers down a run at 4-3.

Allie Miller made her season debut in the bottom of the fifth, pinch-running at second base. Her presence on the bases was felt immediately, as Haley Ann Frank laid down a bunt to the pitcher, allowing Haylee Brown and Miller to score from second and third.

AUM's scoring for game one would end later in the inning as Lexi Love laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Frank from third base to give AUM their 7-2 win over UAH.

Martin and the Warhawks came alive offensively in game two as AUM was able to gain 16 hits in the contest, three shy of tying the all-time record. Martin finished the day going 2-4 with two home runs, both of which were hit in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Fallen, Aycock, Newsome, and Frank added multi-hit games as well, aiding to the Warhawks' run-rule victory. Hannah Creel's ERA only went down against the Chargers in game two, as she spun all five innings without allowing an earned run.

Fallen continued her hot week at the plate in the bottom of the first in game two, lacing a double into the left-centerfield gap to score Aycock to give AUM a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Chloe Derrick singled through the left side to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

UAH's offense was held in check until the fourth inning as an error from Martin extended the inning one more batter. The Chargers were able to get on the board after an RBI single with two outs scored a runner to cut the lead in half.

With a runner on third base and one out in the top of the fifth, Alabama Huntsville was able to tie the game at two after Martin decided to trade an out for a run on a ball hit to the middle infielder.

Martin began the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with an inside-the-park home run after two Chargers went for a ball that hit off the centerfield wall, giving AUM a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Frank would double on a ball that hit off the glove of the left fielder, allowing Miller to score from second.

A pinch-hit RBI bunt from Lexie Bullock ran the score to 5-2, and later in the inning, Bullock was able to score AUM's sixth run of the contest after scoring on a wild pitch. Fallen drove in her second run of game two on a single up the middle to score Newsome to push AUM's lead to 7-2.

With two outs in the inning and two runners on base, Martin found herself at the plate with a chance to end the game. She took a two-strike pitch and hammered a ball over the left-centerfield fence for her second home run of the inning to send AUM home with a 10-2 win.

The Warhawks will now turn their attention to a non-conference home doubleheader with 15th-ranked North Georgia on Tuesday. AUM defeated UNG twice last year, with the Nighthawks holding the No. 1 national ranking at the time. The doubleheader from the AUM Softball Complex is set to begin at 2 p.m.
