PENSACOLA, Fla. – After a thrilling doubleheader sweep, the 17
th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team defeated No. 11 and Gulf South Conference foe West Florida 4-1 and 6-5 to take the series against the Argos.
AUM jumps to 23-6 on the year with an 11-3 record in Gulf South action. The Warhawks have also won their sixth game in a row and their ninth game on the road. West Florida falls to 18-6 on the year with a 12-2 mark in conference play.
Freshman hurler
Morgan Ferguson got the start in a pivotal game one against the Argos. She stepped up to the task and threw all seven innings against West Florida, striking out four while surrendering just one run.
Molly Cobb and
Gia Martin both netted multi-hit games in game one against West Florida.
Kat Fallen added her eighth home run of the season with a solo shot in the fifth inning.
Despite the AUM win, it was West Florida who struck first in game one. In a double steal attempt with runners on first and third, Teala Howard swiped home to give the Argos a 1-0 lead after one inning of action.
It wouldn't take long for the Warhawks to respond as in the top of the third junior slugger Cobb drove home
Shelby Newsome with an RBI single into left field. Later in the inning, Martin lined a single into right field to score Cobb and Fallen to give AUM a 2-1 lead.
Fallen added on to the AUM lead in the top of the fifth after launching a solo shot to centerfield to push the Warhawk lead to 3-1. Martin added her second RBI of the game in the top of the seventh, driving in
Lexie Bullock to give the Warhawks their eventual 4-1 lead.
Cobb was the offensive standout in game two for the Warhawks, going 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Outfielder
Haley Ann Frank also netted two hits in the contest to continue her stellar start to her collegiate career.
Rookie arm
Avery Dickerson earned her sixth win of the season after coming in relief of
Hannah Creel. Dickerson threw the final three innings to secure the win for AUM.
Similar to game one, West Florida was able to grab the early advantage over the Warhawks after an RBI single plated the game's first run.
West Florida's defensive miscues began in the top of the second as
Olivia Aycock was able to bring home a pair of runners after a fielding error allowed Frank and
Chloe Derrick to score to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead after two innings.
After earning her first start of the season,
Allie Miller made her first offensive contribution of the season in the top of the third inning, lifting a sacrifice fly to center to score Cobb to push AUM's lead to 3-1.
Cobb's strong day at the plate continued in the top of the fourth as she laced a two-run single into left to score Aycock and Frank. The Argos were able to cut into the lead in the bottom half of the inning, pushing across a run on an RBI groundout.
It was West Florida's turn to take advantage of a defensive miscue as in the bottom of the fifth, three runs scored on a fielding error from the AUM left fielder to tie the game at 5-5 heading down the stretch.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, a double steal with Bullock and Martin was put into motion as the sophomore infielder was able to steal home to secure the 6-5 victory for the Warhawks.
AUM and West Florida will wrap up the top-25 battle tomorrow afternoon at noon to conclude the three-game series in Pensacola.
