#6 Warhawks Take Series In Titletown After Thrilling 4-3 Win

VALDOSTA, Ga. – In a critical game three of a Gulf South Conference series between the sixth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team and the third-ranked Blazers, the Warhawks eeked out a thrilling 4-3 win in extra innings to win two of three.

The Warhawks improve their 2022 record to 32-7 and move to 20-4 in Gulf South Conference action. Valdosta State falls to 28-7 this season with a 20-3 mark in Gulf South play.

Alanna Goble captured her seventh-straight win after firing eight innings against Valdosta State. She struck out two batters and scattered three runs to win her eighth game of 2022. Samantha Richards got tabbed with two losses this weekend after entering the series with a 21-2 record.

Sophomore catcher Margaret Morgan had a great day at the dish for the Warhawks. She had a solo home run that gave AUM a 2-0 lead and added a late RBI single. Chloe Derrick had a deciding solo home run in the eighth inning for AUM.

The Warhawks were able to strike first in game three against Valdosta State. Derrick was able to rip a liner to the shortstop, who could not handle the hit as the ball ricocheted off her and into center field, which allowed Gia Martin to score the game's first run.

Later in the inning, with no one on base, Morgan stepped up and launched a solo jack over the centerfield fence to bring AUM's lead to 2-0. In the following inning, the Blazers answered with their own solo home run to cut the AUM lead to 2-1.

After Goble settled into the game after the home run in the second, Valdosta State was kept off the board until Morgan Hill connected on a home run to centerfield to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

The game went into extra innings for the second time this series. With two outs in the top of the eight, Derrick took a 2-2 pitch and gave the Warhawks a 3-2 lead on her sixth home run of the season. Morgan added an insurance run with an RBI single that scored Allie Miller to give the Warhawks a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the inning.

Valdosta State would not go away quietly as the Blazers were able to push across a run when the Warhawks opted to trade a run for the second out of the inning. Goble was then able to get Taylor Lewis to ground out to second to clinch the series for the Warhawks.

AUM will remain on the road and will continue their eight-game road trip for their next contest. AUM will travel to Memphis, Tennessee, to take on Christian Brothers in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 23, at 1 p.m.
