#11 Softball Walks Off West Alabama Twice To Clinch Series Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The 11th-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used a walk-off home run from Molly Cobb, and a walk-off sacrifice fly from Shelby Newsome to grab a pair of wins over Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama.

AUM, after two wins, improves to 26-6 on the year and now boasts a 14-3 record in Gulf South Conference action. West Alabama falls to 17-15 on the year with a 9-8 mark in conference action.

Newsome kicked off her dramatic day at the plate with a stellar performance in game one. She went 1-2 at the plate with three RBIs, including a two-run double. Both Kat Fallen and Cobb launched home runs in the winning effort.

Freshman arm Morgan Ferguson claimed her 10th win of the season after throwing another complete game. Ferguson threw all six innings against West Alabama, limiting the Tigers to four hits while fanning four batters.

The scoring began in the second inning as AUM was able to get on the board first after an RBI groundout from Haley Ann Frank. With two gone in the inning, Newsome was able to rip a two-run double into right-centerfield to put AUM ahead 3-0.

Newsome recorded her third RBI of the day after a bases-loaded walk pushed the score to 4-0 in the fourth. Olivia Aycock added an RBI later in the inning, doubling down the left-field line. AUM was able to quickly run their lead to 8-0 after a three-run homer from Fallen.

After West Alabama avoided a five-inning run-rule defeat with an RBI in the fifth, Cobb proceeded to end the game in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run that rang off the party deck in right-centerfield to give AUM a 10-1 win.

Game two featured an 11-inning thriller that featured multiple lead changes throughout. Brinkley Yevak was called upon in relief and threw 5.2 innings, limiting West Alabama to one hit.

Allie Miller led the charge offensively in game two for AUM, netting a three-hit effort against the West Alabama starter who threw all 11 innings for the Tigers. Aycock, Cobb, and Frank netted multi-hit efforts as well.

AUM found themselves on top early again in game two. Margaret Morgan laced a two-run double into left-centerfield to score Miller and Chloe Derrick to put the Warhawks ahead 2-0. AUM added a third run after an Aycock RBI single.

With West Alabama trailing 3-1 heading into the sixth, an RBI double from Cassie Matlock put West Alabama within a run at 3-2. With the bases loaded, Avery Dickerson walked in the game-tying run. Yevak was able to induce an inning-ending double play to limit the damage.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, West Alabama took the lead in the top of the 10th after an error from Yevak allowed a run to score after a close play at the plate.

With AUM down to its last strike, Miller lazily tapped a ball to the shortstop and then beat out the throw to allow Cobb to score from third to tie the game. In the bottom of the 11th and the winning run on third, Newsome was able to lift a ball deep enough into right field to allow Lexi Love to score the winning run.

AUM will wrap up their three-game series with West Alabama tomorrow afternoon. The action from the AUM Softball Complex is set to begin at 1 p.m.
