MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Baseball Team took both games of its doubleheader against West Alabama on Saturday, April 2 to claim the Gulf South Conference series against the Tigers two games to one.
AUM won game one of the day 21-2 and took the series' rubber match 2-0. The wins improve the Warhawks' record to 20-14 overall and 10-8 in GSC action.
GAME ONE
Caleb Beaver, Zach Feaster, Clayton Phillips, and Brody Syer all drove in three runs for AUM, with Syer slugging a home run, Feaster knocking a double, and Phillips recording a triple. Zach Dew knocked a game-high four hits with three runs scored while Joseph Hartsfield accounted for a pair of runs, hits, and RBI's.
Mario Galloway socked his first home run of the season in game one while Matthew Marfice added a double.
Andrew Cronan (6-1) picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season, surrendering just two runs over six innings and striking out three. Mason Elmore tossed the seventh and final inning of game one.
AUM wasted no time getting on the board, tallying eight runs over its first two at-bats in game one. An RBI groundout from Beaver, followed by a Dew RBI single and a two-run double from Feaster, got AUM going in the first inning.
Jackson Ceman plated the Warhawks' first run of the second with an RBI single through the right side that brought home Phillips, who reached base to start the inning via walk and was bunted into scoring position by Nick Freeman. Syer would account for the big blow in the frame with a three-run blast two batters later, his team-leading sixth of 2022, to put AUM up 8-0.
The Warhawks conceded a run in the top of the fourth via an RBI groundout but would go on to put the game out of reach by scoring seven runs their next time up.
Beaver brought in the inning's first run with an RBI groundout, followed by a passed by that brought home Syer. A pair of RBI singles from Feaster and Hartsfield, followed by a sac fly from Phillips, an RBI hit batsman from Beaver, and a balk that brought home Freeman to make it 15-1.
AUM added five more runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run blast by Galloway. An RBI single from Hartsfield and a two-RBI triple from Phillips also accounted for the damage done in the frame.
After giving up the Tiger's second run of the game in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout to second, AUM got its final run of the game on a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded that brought home Jackson Murphy.
GAME TWO
Ceman led AUM with a pair of base hits and a run batted in, marking for his team-best 15th multi-hit game of the season. Beaver additionally logged an RBI while Phillips notched a hit and a run scored.
Luke Turner (5-1) needed just 78 pitches to toss his first career shutout for the Warhawks. The sophomore righty fanned seven in game two while giving up just four base hits.
AUM's first run of the game came in the top of the first, when Ceman was brought in to score on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Beaver. Ceman reached base with one out on an RBI infield hit and then came all the way around to third on a wild pitch turned throwing error a few pitches later.
The Warhawks scored their second and final run in inning number three, courtesy of a Ceman RBI knock to right. Phillips led off the third with an infield hit and reached third following a wild pitch and a Freeman single through the right side.
The Warhawks will be back in action on Wednesday, April 6 at Miles College for a regional midweek showdown. First pitch from Rickwood Field is set for 2:00 p.m.
