MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The fifth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used two home runs from Chloe Derrick and 12 unanswered runs to take down Gulf South Conference rival Montevallo in a midweek clash.
The Warhawks bring their record to 35-8 in 2022, while the Falcons fall to 23-20 on the year. This game did not count toward the GSC standings. AUM closes the regular season with 15 road wins.
Chloe Derrick and Kat Fallen paced the Warhawk offense against Montevallo, as they both recorded four RBI nights. Derrick launched two home runs in the contest, while Fallen and Shelby Newsome also connected on home runs.
Morgan Ferguson tallied her team-leading 12th win of the season after throwing four innings in relief. She allowed one hit, a home run, and struck out eight Falcons in the win for AUM.
Despite a sac fly from Molly Cobb in the first inning, it was the Falcons who set the tone early in the contest. Montevallo erupted for seven runs in the second inning against Hannah Creel and Avery Dickerson to jump out to a 7-1 lead after two innings of play.
The Warhawks started to chip away in the third inning after Cobb recorded her second RBI of the night on an RBI groundout, while Fallen and Faith Wheat were able to score on a wild pitch and an error from the catcher.
Derrick tallied her first home run of the day in the top of the fourth inning to run the score to 7-5. Fallen's RBI single in the following inning scored Newsome to bring the Warhawks to within one, and later in the inning, Derrick gave AUM their second lead of the day with a three-run homer to left-center.
Fallen followed with a three-run shot of her own in the top of the sixth to run the score to 12-7. In the seventh, Newsome connected on an insurance home run to give AUM their 13th run of the game. Montevallo added a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, but Ferguson was able to hang on to clinch the win for AUM.
The Warhawks will return home for their final home series of the regular season. With three wins against Gulf South Conference foe Shorter, AUM would clinch back-to-back regular-season GSC championships.
