Newsome Extends On-Base Streak, Fallen Approaches History In #3 AUM’s Tournament-Opening Win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In the opening game of the NCAA tournament, the top-seeded and third-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team bested eighth-ranked Tuskegee 7-3 at the AUM Softball Complex.

The Warhawks win their second NCAA tournament game in program history and are now 44-9 in 2022. The AUM Softball Complex continues to be kind to AUM as the Warhawks are now 21-1 at home this season.

Alanna Goble was spectacular once again for the Warhawks in the postseason. The junior hurler threw all seven innings for AUM and did not allow anan earned run. The Blountsville native fired 10 strikeouts and allowed just three Golden Tiger hits.

Shelby Newsome extended her on-base streak to 30 games and went 1-3 at the plate with an RBI. With two RBIs against Tuskegee, Kat Fallen is now one RBI shy of tying the single-season RBI record, while Gia Martin remains two shy of the same feat.

AUM got the scoring started against Tuskegee in the first as Fallen connected on an RBI single up the middle to score Newsome. A Chloe Derrick RBI double scored Fallen from second base later in the inning but was thrown out trying to stretch the play into a triple to end the first inning threat.

The offense continued in the bottom of the second inning as Haley Ann Frank reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Lexi Love to score from third. Newsome singled down the right-field line to score the pinch-runner Shelby Edgeworth to run the score to 4-0, while Fallen was able to record her 56th RBI of the season to push the lead to 5-0 on an RBI groundout.

After a dropped third strike and a throwing error extended Tuskegee's half of the third inning, the Golden Tigers were able to capitalize and scored two unearned runs off of Goble to cut their deficit to 5-2 after three innings of play.

In the bottom of the fifth, Derrick was able to net a sac fly to push the AUM lead to 6-2, but a dropped fly ball in the following half-inning put the Warhawks' lead back to three. The Warhawks would add a run on a Tuskegee error in the bottom of the sixth, giving AUM their eventual 7-3 win.

The Warhawks will have a chance to earn a spot in Saturday's championship game with a win tomorrow against fourth-seeded Nova Southeastern. The Warhawks will face the Sharks from the AUM Softball Complex tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
