Warhawks Claim South Region Title For The First Time In Program History

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team needed to beat Valdosta State twice entering Friday afternoon and hung on for two thrilling victories to punch their first-ever ticket to the NCAA championships in Denver.

AUM took game one 3-2 before hanging on to beat the Blazers 2-1 in the third and deciding game of the best-of-three series. Head coach Eric Newell won his 300th career game after the game one victory, and the Warhawks tied the single-season record for the most wins at the AUM Softball Complex.

The Warhawks were able to jump on the board early against the Blazers in game one after two hours of rain and lightning delays. Molly Cobb started the scoring in the first after a single was too hard to handle and resulted in AUM's first run of the game.

Senior shortstop Olivia Aycock plated the second run of the game in the top of the second inning after laying down a bunt to score Faith Wheat from third base. Aycock was able to delay the Blazer infield on a delayed steal attempt to allow Haley Ann Frank to score the third run of the game for AUM.

Valdosta State answered right back in the third and fourth innings as a Morgan Hill home run cut the Warhawk lead to 3-1. An RBI double in the fourth inning was the final run the Blazers scored, but VSU still threatened to score late in the game.

Against starter Avery Dickerson, Valdosta State was able to load the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh. Dickerson was able to net a flyout to centerfield and induced a game-ending double play after a line drive was hit to Haley Brown, who doubled off the runner at third base to set up a winner-take-all-game three.

Brinkley Yevak was called upon in game two for the Warhawks after firing 5.1 innings in relief in game one of the series. The Warhawk arm followed her performance with a complete game in game three and allowed just two hits and no earned runs.

Kat Fallen continued her hot play in the NCAA tournament and went 4-4 with an RBI in game three against Valdosta State. Faith Wheat also had a multi-hit effort against the Blazers, going 2-3 with a triple.

AUM opened the scoring again in game two as Fallen was able to lace a double into the right-centerfield gap to score Frank from first base to give the Warhawks an early 1-0 lead. The pitchers for both teams would settle into the game as no one would score again until the seventh inning.

Aycock was able to add some insurance for the Warhawks in the top of the seventh after an RBI groundout plated Wheat and gave AUM a 2-0 lead heading into the final inning. After an error from Yevak with two outs extended the game in the seventh,

Taylor Lewis knocked in a run on a two-out double, but Yevak was able to get the next hitter to ground out to punch AUM's ticket to Denver.

The Warhawks will await their first-round opponent in the World Series next week. For all the information, stay tuned to AUM Athletics on social media.  For the latest on AUM athletics, find us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram
