Dickerson Sensational In AUM’s Tournament-Opening Shutout Win

DENVER, Co. – The third-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery softball team earned a commanding 4-0 victory over sixth-seeded Seton Hill on the backs of a complete-game shutout from freshman hurler Avery Dickerson.

The Warhawks advance to the winner's bracket after the game one win and have now clinched their first victory in the NCAA finals in program history. Seton Hill falls to the loser's bracket and will face second-seeded Adelphi tomorrow night.

Dickerson earned just her third start of the season in game one against the Griffins. The freshman threw all seven innings for AUM and allowed just three hits while striking out two to clinch AUM's win over Seton Hill.

Offensively, the Warhawks used a balanced attack to put away the Griffins. Shelby Newsome came through with a clutch two-run single to open the scoring in the second. In total, the Warhawks used seven hits to win 4-0.

Newsome earned the start in the nine spot for the Warhawks in game one, and after an obstruction call at third base extended the game, the sophomore ripped a single into left field to score Faith Wheat and Haylee Brown to give AUM a 2-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Haley Ann Frank stole second base, and the throw from the Seton Hill catcher got past the infield allowing Newsome to score on the error to put AUM ahead 3-0. The scoring for AUM ended in the bottom of the third when Margaret Morgan doubled down the left-field line to put the Orange & Black ahead 4-0.

Dickerson ran into some trouble in the top of the seventh inning but was able to strand two runners in scoring position to give the Warhawks their 4-0 win over Seton Hill.

The Warhawks will now face seventh-seeded North Georgia in the winner's bracket with a trip to the semifinals on the line. The two teams will battle at 2:30 p.m. AUM defeated North Georgia twice this season in March.
