Marfice Earns GSC Baseball Scholar-Athlete Honors, Baseball Drops Tournament Opener To Lee

OXFORD, Ala. – The fourth-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team dropped a game one contest 9-1 to fifth-seeded Lee in the opener of the Gulf South Conference postseason tournament.

Before the contest, senior first baseman Matthew Marfice was honored with his Gulf South Conference champion scholar-athlete award. He has the highest cumulative GPA of any baseball student-athlete at the GSC tournament.

The Warhawks drop the tournament opener and will face the loser of the game between the top-seeded Delta State Statesmen and the eighth-seeded Shorter Hawks.

AUM starter Luke Turner took the loss in game one. He threw 5.2 innings of work and allowed seven hits, four runs, and struck out five batters. Slugger Kasey Clark launched a home run ball over the right-field wall to open the AUM scoring.

Lee got the scoring started in the first inning after getting multiple runners on in the opening frame. The Flames were able to bring in the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 over the Warhawks.

AUM answered in the bottom of the second inning after junior slugger Clark launched a moonshot over the right-field wall to even the scoring at one aside. Later in the evening, the Flames connected on a home run of their own, a three-run shot in the fifth inning to go ahead 4-1.

Lee added a big inning in the top of the eighth as the scoring opened with a sac fly to right field to run Lee's lead to 5-1. A late two-out three-run home run extended the Flames' lead to 8-1 over the Warhawks.
