Dickerson Outduels GSC Pitcher Of The Year, Keeps #4 Warhawks Alive In GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. – On a windy day in Oxford, the fourth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used a five-inning relief appearance from Avery Dickerson to stay alive in the Gulf South Conference tournament, defeating second-seeded Valdosta State 6-4 in an elimination game.

The Warhawks move to 2-1 in the conference tournament and win their 40th game of the season overall. AUM also moves their 2022 record against Valdosta State to 3-1 after taking the regular-season series two games to one.

There was no one better on the field on Friday afternoon than Dickerson. In relief of Morgan Ferguson, the freshman threw the remaining 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit, and one earned run while striking out three batters.

Kat Fallen added to her tournament totals in game three for AUM, going 2-3 against GSC Pitcher of The Year Samantha Richards. Gia Martin launched her first home run of the tournament, while Haley Ann Frank went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Like in every game in the tournament so far for the Warhawks, they fell behind in the top of the second inning. The Blazers tallied two runs in the second on an RBI double, and a sacrifice fly gave Valdosta State an early 2-0 lead.

The Warhawks, however, responded immediately in the following inning. Frank got the offense rolling with an RBI single up the middle to score Lexi Love, while Olivia Aycock scored Faith Wheat to tie the game at two.

After Dickerson held the Blazer offense in check in the top of the third, and Martin was able to connect on her first home run of the tournament to give AUM a 3-2 lead over Valdosta State.

The Warhawk offense desired some insurance against the Blazers in the bottom of the fifth, as two squeeze plays added the AUM run total to five after Chloe Derrick and Love connected on two perfect bunts to bring home a pair of runs.

Fallen's late RBI single in the bottom of the sixth proved valuable as Valdosta State was able to record a pair of runs on a two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Dickerson was able to hold down the fort to end the game, and earned her eighth win of the season.

The Warhawks will play the first of two possible games tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. AUM will have to defeat seventh-seeded West Alabama twice tomorrow if they want to advance to Sunday's championship game.
