Freshmen Lead #4 Warhawks To Back-To-Back Appearances In GSC Title Game

OXFORD, Ala. – After having to beat seventh-seeded West Alabama twice to avoid elimination, the fourth-ranked and top-seeded Auburn University at Montgomery softball team beat the Tigers 8-1 and 7-3 to advance to the Gulf South Conference championship game.

The Warhawks are now 4-1 in the tournament after starting the tournament with a win over Union before falling to UAH. AUM rebounded by besting Valdosta State while taking two wins from West Alabama to advance to the title game.

Freshman and Oxford native Chloe Derrick registered a big game for the Warhawks in game one for AUM. She went 2-3 with a double and a home run off the scoreboard in right-center. Sophomore Kat Fallen also registered a two-hit game, going 2-4 with an RBI.

Alanna Goble was stellar in her start in game one, throwing six innings against the Tigers while limiting West Alabama to one unearned run and three hits. The junior walked just one batter while recording four strikeouts.

Shelby Newsome extended her on-base streak to 27 games in the opening inning of game one against West Alabama. She was able to bring home Olivia Aycock on an RBI single into center field to give AUM an early 1-0 lead.

Gia Martin was able to add to her season RBI total later in the inning, netting a two-run single up the middle to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead over West Alabama. Derrick concluded the scoring in the inning after netting a sac fly.

The Warhawk offense kept churning in the top of the second inning as Aycock was able to advance Margaret Morgan to home plate on an RBI groundout to the pitcher. Fallen ran the game score to 6-0 after a single up the middle scored Haley Ann Frank.

Oxford native Derrick was able to launch her second home run of the tournament in the top of the fifth to push AUM's lead to seven, but the Tigers were able to answer with their own run in the bottom of the sixth to send the score to 7-1 heading into the seventh.

After netting a pinch-hit single against Valdosta State, Lexie Bullock recorded another clutch single in the top of the seventh, scoring Derrick to give AUM their eventual 8-1 win.

Game two featured more relief heroics from freshman Avery Dickerson. She came in relief of Hannah Creel and threw seven innings for AUM. She allowed just four hits, no earned runs, while walking two and recording a pair of strikeouts.

Derrick and Martin launched home runs in the contest and recorded multi-hit games in game two. Meanwhile, rookie Faith Wheat connected on her first-career home run in the top of the seventh to highlight a 3-3 day at the plate.

The Warhawks stole six bases in game two. Aycock and Newsome netted two steals while Wheat and Frank swiped a bag. Newsome was also hit three times in game two against the Tigers.

After Newsome walked with one out in the top of the first, a stolen base attempt resulted in an overthrow of second base and an eventual overthrow of third base to allow the sophomore to score the game's first run.

West Alabama was able to take the lead over the Warhawks for the first time on Saturday in the bottom of the first. A bunt single and a fielder's choice to the pitcher allowed two runs to score as the Tigers found a 2-1 lead over AUM after one.

Martin and Derrick aided the offensive efforts in the top of the third. Martin got the scoring started in the inning after a solo shot to center. Two pitches later, Derrick connected on her second home run of the day to give AUM a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Newsome reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, allowing both Aycock and Wheat to score to run the total to 5-2. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman arm Dickerson was able to lock down the Tiger offense by stranding the bases loaded to keep the score at 5-3.

Wheat got the run back for AUM after slapping a ball over the left-center wall to give her the first home run of her career. Bullock would later score on an RBI groundout from Aycock to give the Warhawks their 7-3 win.

AUM will face Alabama Huntsville for the GSC championship and the automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. The Warhawks and Chargers have split the season series, with both sides winning twice. The fifth game of the series will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning.
