#4 Softball Scores Seven Unanswered To Win Back-To-Back Gulf South Conference Titles

OXFORD, Ala. – The top-seeded and fourth-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery softball team secured their second-straight Gulf South Conference championship after beating fourth-seeded Alabama Huntsville 7-4.

The Warhawks finish the tournament with a 4-1 record and won their last three games while facing elimination. AUM earns the GSC's automatic bid in the NCAA tournament for the second time in as many years and will enter the national field with a record of 43-9.

For the second day in a row, Chloe Derrick and Gia Martin launched back-to-back home runs. Both Martin and Derrick finished the day going 2-3 at the plate with one home run, two runs scored, and one RBI.

Sophomore Shelby Newsome extended her on-base streak to 29 games after a first-inning hit by pitch. Alanna Goble secured the win in the circle for AUM, going seven innings while allowing five hits while striking out four.

Alabama Huntsville got the scoring started in the bottom of the first after the Warhawks loaded the bases with one out but could not push across a run. A two-run single with two outs gave the Chargers an early lead before an RBI double push UAH's lead to 3-0 after one.

A solo home run in the bottom of the second from Kaylee Vaught gave Alabama Huntsville a 4-0 lead over AUM, while the starter Layton Murphy locked down the AUM offense through three innings of play.

In the fourth inning, Margaret Morgan started the scoring for AUM after laying down a sacrifice squeeze to score Derrick from third. Haley Ann Frank was able to net an RBI single later in the inning to cut the UAH lead in half, while a two-run double from Newsome tied the game at four.

Power hitter Faith Wheat got the action going for the Warhawks in the fifth and gave AUM their first lead of the day on an RBI single after a 10-pitch at-bat.

Looking for insurance in the seventh, Martin led off the inning with a solo shot over the center-field wall to give AUM a 6-4 lead. Derrick followed on the first pitch of her at-bat to give AUM their eventual 7-4 and second-straight GSC title.

AUM will find out who they play in the NCAA tournament tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., when the NCAA will conduct their selection show. The show will air on NCAA.com.
