Men's Soccer Battles to 0-0 Draw Against West Florida

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team put together a handful of late defensive stops in a scoreless battle with the University of West Florida on Sunday afternoon at the AUM Soccer Complex.

The 0-0 draw marked the seventh shutout for the Warhawks defensively, and the 11th time in as many tries that AUM allowed one goal or less on defense.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams had an early shot on goal five minutes into the match, but each goalkeeper made easy work of the respective chances.
  • In the 21st minute, UWF goalkeeper Nicolas Meckien perfectly timed a Franck Kouentchi shot to notch a save and keep the match scoreless.
  • Each team had four shots in the first half but neither was able to find a goal going into the halftime break.
  • The Argos challenged AUM defensively in the second half with seven shots, but goalkeeper William Blake and the Warhawks found four saves in the second half to keep UWF off the scoreboard.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • West Florida outshot AUM 11-4 in the match overall, with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • UWF had six set-piece opportunities off of corner kicks, but the AUM defense was up to the task each time. 
  • The Warhawks recorded their seventh shutout and have allowed one goal or less in all 11 matches this season.
  • William Blake continues to pace the GSC in goals against average (.381), goals allowed (4), shutouts (6), and save percentage (.900).

  • "We had another great battle today against one of the best sides in the region," said head coach Matthew Thorne. "We found some early chances to take the lead, and they had some chances later in the second half to find a goal. I am proud of this group and how they continue to work hard for each other. We got a well-earned point and now we move on to another tough GSC game Friday night. Up the Warhawks!"
