Late Push Sends Mississippi College Past Men's Basketball

CLINTON, Miss. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team got a Jalen Gaston layup to fall with 1:32 left in the game to take a one-point lead, but a late technical foul helped Mississippi College on a 9-4 run to close out a victory in Gulf South Conference action on Sunday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mississippi College's Rashad Bolden hit a three-point field goal to give the Choctaws an 11-7 lead at the 12:11 mark as both teams got out to a slow start.
  • The low-scoring first half continued, as Malachi Rhodes' three-pointer with 10:43 to play in the opening half put AUM in double figures.
  • A Jalen Gaston jumper gave the Warhawks a 23-22 advantage with four minutes to go in the half.
  • The Choctaws, however, closed the opening stanza on an 8-0 run to lead 30-23 at the halftime intermission.
  • A pair of Rhodes free throws with 14:53 to play gave the Warhawks a 33-32 advantage.
  • The lead swapped hands 14 times in the second half as both teams continued to battle back and forth.
  • Free throws from Joe Lanzi gave AUM a 55-53 lead, but MC answered with a three-pointer to steal the lead back with 1:46 to go.
  • Trailing by a point with a minute to play, a technical foul on the Warhawks allowed MC to push the lead to three, and a Lucas Heflen three-point basket with 21 seconds to play sealed the win for the home team.

  • Rhodes tallied his second double-double and third double-digit rebound game of the campaign.
  • Gaston's 16 points made it five double-figure efforts this season.
  • AUM's bench outscored MC 33-10 and outscored the Choctaws in the paint 22-14.
