Men's Basketball Defeats Christian Brothers, Completes Weekend Gulf South Conference Sweep

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team got 39 points from the team's bench, including 18 points from Roderick Smith and 16 points from Jalen Gaston, to grind out an 83-76 win over Chrisitan Brothers University on Saturday to sweep both games of the Gulf South Conference weekend at the AUM Athletics Complex.

Travis Anderson added 22 points, nine assists, and two steals to go along with shooting 8-for-13 from the floor and a 4-for-7 effort from three-point territory.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Buccaneers took advantage of two early miscues by the Warhawks in taking an 8-2 lead in the opening three minutes of the contest.
  • A 20-8 run, helped by three-pointers from Anderson, Sam Youngblood, and Joseph Lanzi, gave AUM a 22-16 advantage at the under-12 media timeout. 
  • Both sides played the rest of the half within five points of each other, and AUM held a 37-36 lead at the halftime intermission.
  • The Warhawks got four buckets in a three-minute stretch from Roderick Smith that helped the team open up its largest lead of the game at nine points (62-53).
  • A Deven Tucker layup put AUM up 72-64 with just over five minutes to play and Christian Brothers cut it to a three-point game on three different occasions in the final two minutes. 
  • AUM had every answer, however, as a Gaston jumper and a Smith jumper both immediately put the Warhawks back up two possessions each time.

NOTABLES

  • Anderson logged his sixth game with 20 or more points this season and the 16th in double figures for the Warhawks. He also posted his fourth game of the year with eight or more assists.
  • The Warhawks again won the rebounding battle with a 33-26 advantage on the glass overall. 
  • AUM's bench outscored CBU's bench 39-15, led by 16 points from Gaston and 18 from Smith.
  • The game marked the seventh time this season that the Warhawks have shot 50 percent or better from the field as a team (31-for-55, 56 percent).

UP NEXT

AUM travels to Pensacola, Fla. to take on the University of West Florida on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the team's final regular season road trip.
