Baseball Splits Doubleheader, Drops Weekend Series Against West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team used a 16-run outburst to win the front end of a Saturday doubleheader against the University of West Alabama, but the Tigers rebounded in game two of the day to take the weekend series from the Warhawks.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 1)

  • The Warhawks exploded for seven first-inning runs against the Tigers to open the doubleheader. Cooper Doughman led off the scoring with a sacrifice fly, Zach Dew smacked a 2-RBI single, and Cole McWhorter drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-0.
  • Nick Freeman was then struck by a pitch to plate a run, Jackson Ceman rolled an RBI infield past the pitcher, and Brody Syer worked a bases-loaded walk to make it 7-0 Warhawks. 
  • A Clayton Phillips RBI single and a Freeman fielder's choice ran the score to 9-0, and Ceman added a 2-RBI double to make it 11-0 visitors.
  • Five more sixth-inning runs, helped by a Zach Dew bases-clearing double, helped AUM take game one 16-3.

ON THE MOUND (GM 1)

  • Andrew Cronan worked two innings and allowed two hits and three walks with two strikeouts in the no-decision. 
  • Will Collins earned the win for the Warhawks with 1.1 relief innings tossed. He allowed one hit and one walk against four strikeouts.
  • Michael Myers also logged two shutout frames with two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 2)

  • Both teams set down their opposition in order in the first inning to kick start a low-scoring doubleheader nightcap.
  • The Warahwks were unable to find their first base runner until a Clayton Phillips single in the third. 
  • The Tigers scored their lone run of the game in the last of the fourth to lead 1-0 on two singles and a stolen base.
  • Kasey Clark walked to lead off the seventh, but the Warhawks were unable to bring him around and fell by a final score of 1-0.

ON THE MOUND (GM 2)

  • Clay Weatherly worked 3.1 innings in his start and took the loss. He allowed one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
  • Grant Hickman threw 2.1 innings of shutout relief with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

NOTABLES

  • Game one of the doubleheader marked single-game highs this season for the Warhawks in runs (16), RBIs (16), and walks (13), and tied season-highs in doubles (4) and hits (13).
  • Dew tallied a season and career-best five RBI in game one for the Warhawks.
  • Ceman also tied his career-best single-game RBI mark (3), while Freeman's three RBI were the most in a game in his AUM career. 
  • Brody Syer walked four times in game one, which is the most by any player in a game in the past two seasons for the Warhawks. 
  • Ceman tallied his third game of the year with multiple hits in game one, Wright had his fifth game with multiple hits, and Dew added his second multi-hit game this season.
  • Game two marked the 10th time this season that the Warhawks have scored four runs or less in a game.
