Dickerson Pitches Perfect Game, Softball Splits Day One at Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team got a perfect game from Avery Dickerson, the first of her career, and split two games at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Friday afternoon. 

AUM mustered just three hits in a 3-0 loss against Saint Leo University before Dickerson retired all 15 batters she faced to record a perfect game in the Warhawks' 8-0 victory over Lander University.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 1)
  • AUM's Olivia Aycock got the day started with a single through the left side but the Warhawks could not plate a run in the first inning.  
  • Saint Leo scored all three unearned runs in the fourth inning to take the 3-0 lead. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Lexie Love got on base with a single, but her pinch-runner Lexie Bullock was thrown out at second to end the inning. 
  • Neither team was able to score a run the rest of the way as the Lions got the 3-0 win. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Morgan Ferguson went six innings and allowed seven hits, three runs, and struck out three batters.
HIGHLIGHTS (GM 2)
  • AUM's bats came alive in the second inning, scoring five runs on six hits. In the inning, Lexie Love singled to right to score Molly Cobb and Gia Martin. 
  • Allie Miller hit a single to third and scored Love from third base. 
  • Haley Ann Frank bunted and scored Miller from third base. 
  • Kat Fallen hit a home run to left-center field and scored Frank to extend the Warhawk's lead to 6-0 in the second inning. 
  • Chloe Baynes added an infield single and scored Martin in the third inning to put AUM up 7-0. 
  • The Warhawks' final run came in the bottom of the fifth inning as Aycock singled down the left field line and scored Baynes from third base to end the game. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Dickerson earned the win for the Warhawks pitching five innings and facing 15 batters on the day. She did not yield a Bearcats baserunner.
NOTABLES
  • Dickerson pitched a perfect game against Lander in five innings, allowing no runs, no hits, and facing 15 batters. It was the first perfect game of her career.
  • Fallen went 3-of-5 on the day including a two-run homer against Lander. 
  • Lexi Love recorded one hit and batted in two runs against Lander. 
  • Head softball coach Scottie Wilkes earned her first victory as a head coach after the 8-0 victory over Lander. 
WORDS FROM THE WARHAWKS

"The highlight of the day was Avery throwing a perfect game," Wilkes said. "That is a huge accomplishment! We did not start the day sharp; we hurt ourselves defensively in the first game and could not put things together offensively. But we turned things around in the second game and ended the day with a great win."

UP NEXT
AUM will return to the Gulf Shores Sportsplex on Saturday, February 4 to take on Rollins College and Florida Tech at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
