Late Delta State Rally Spoils Baseball Series Finale

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Delta State University hit four solo home runs and plated a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to complete a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Auburn University at Montgomery baseball team as the Statesmen clinched the weekend finale and the series.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Jonathan Dewberry singled and scored on a wild pitch to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the first.
  • AUM responded with a Kasey Clark RBI double and a Cooper Doughman sacrifice fly to right field to take a 2-1 lead after one inning.
  • Delta State got a pair of solo home runs, from Kirkland Trahan and Eric Newsome in the fourth to lead 3-2, but Nick Freeman and Jackson Ceman posted RBI singles to steal the lead back 4-3.
  • AUM made it 5-3 on a Zach Dew RBI single in the fifth.
  • Trahan again homered in the sixth, but Bordy Syer answered with a sacrifice fly to score Cole McWhorter and make it 6-4 AUM.
  • Trahan found his third homer of the game for DSU in the eighth, and scored two in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead. 
  • Jarren Wright reached on a two-base error to lead off the last of the ninth, but a strikeout, a ground out, and a pop up ended the comeback attempt. 
ON THE MOUND 
  • Clay Slagle allowed three runs, all earned, on four hits and one walk with two strikeouts in the no-decision.
  • Wade Chandler allowed a run on two hits in 1.1 relief innings. 
  • Michael Myers (2-3) took the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.
  • Brett Pitts came in and retired the only man he faced in the top of the ninth. 
NOTABLES
  • Six different Warhawks registered an RBI on the day, including the first five men in the lineup.
  • McWhorter went 2-for-5 with a pair of singles and a pair of run scores, as he posted a multi-hit game for the second day in a row.
  • AUM tallied 11 hits in the game but was only able to find one extra-base hit, a Kasey Clark double in the first inning.

The Warhawks host Tuskegee in midweek action on Wednesday, March 29 at 5 p.m. at Q.V. Lowe Field.
