Derrick's Two Homers Push Warhawks Past VSU In GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. -  Chloe Derrick blasted two homers in Auburn University at Montgomery softball's 10-4 victory over Valdosta State University in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Choccolocco Park.

HIGHLIGHTS 
  • Chloe Baynes scored the first run of the game off a sacrifice fly from Derrick in the bottom of the first inning. 
  • The Warhawks took a 7-0 lead in the second inning after scoring one run on on a VSU throwing error and two runs off a Kat Fallen single that scored Allie Miller and Baynes. Derrick's first homer was a three-run shot that gave AUM seven runs. 
  • Valdosta State plated three runs in the third frame off a three-run homer. 
  • Gia Martin doubled to left center field that brought Derrick home in the fourth inning that gave AUM a 8-3 lead. 
  • The Blazers scored their final run of the game in the sixth inning off a RBI double. 
  • Derrick homered in the bottom of the sixth to bring Fallen home and the Warhawks earned the 10-4 victory. 
IN THE CIRCLE 
  • Avery Dickerson got the start throwing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck two batters out and walked one. 
  • Morgan Ferguson tossed 1.1 innings and gave up one earned run.
  • Alanna Goble worked the final two frames and gave up no runs on one hit. She struck one batter out. 
WORDS WITH WARHAWKS

"It feels great opening up the conference tournament with a win!" head softball coach Scottie Wilkes said. "We did a great job at making their defense work and scoring a lot of runs. Our defense got us out of some jams and I am proud of our team."

The Warhawks will take on the No. 1 seed University of Alabama in Huntsville on Thursday, May 4 at 6 p.m. in Oxford, Alabama at Choccolocco Park.
