PENSACOLA, Fla. - The AUM women's soccer team traveled to No. 18 West Florida for a Gulf South Conference matchup on Sunday that resulted in a 2-1 loss.
AUM (2-7-2, 0-6-1) recorded just five shots, with three on goal. West Florida (8-1-2, 6-0-1) finished with 25 shots total and 13 on goal as they scored a goal in both the first and second half.
The opening goal in Sunday's match came in the 27
th minute by West Florida's Mya Swinton. The Argonauts would hold on to the one-score lead headed into half time after holding the Warhawks scoreless.
West Florida extended the lead in the second half with another goal in the 57
th minute. Swinton would add her second score of the game to put UWF up by a pair with 33 minutes remaining.
AUM was able to get on the board late in the match after a free kick led to a goal for
Laia Gonzalez in the 76
thminute. Gonzalez leads the team five goals on the season and is tied for the third most in the GSC.
The early two-goal deficit was too much for the Warhawks to overcome on the road and would drop their third consecutive conference match.
Karla Guzman-Ortiz recorded 11 more saves for AUM on Friday to put her in the league lead at 71 on the year.
AUM will return to action Saturday, October 19 when the squad plays Valdosta State. Kick off in Montgomery, Alabama is set for 3:00 p.m. Central Time.
