Warhawks Get Home Win Over Valdosta State

AUM scored at least two goals for the seventh time this season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The AUM women's soccer team broke out of a winless streak in a big way, scoring a pair of goals in a 2-1 victory over Valdosta State at the AUM Soccer Complex on Saturday.

AUM (3-7-2, 1-6-1 Gulf South) snapped an 8-game stretch where they had gone 0-6-2 and earned the second all-time victory over the Blazers - their first since 2016.

The Warhawks got goals from Reia Henry and Laia Gonzalez to grab a 2-0 lead early in the second half. Michaelyn Manning assisted on both goals.

The first score came in the 40th minute off a free kick. Manning sent a ball into the goal box from the left side where Henry rose above the mass of players and headed it in from a couple of yards out. It was her third goal of the year.

The Warhawks added to their lead six minutes into the second half, when Manning sent a free kick from the VSU side of the midfield stripe into the penalty area where Gonzalez beat a defender to the landing spot and 1-timed it past Claire Timberlake in goal. It was her team-leading sixth score of the season.

The Blazers battled back and cut the margin in half with a goal by Molly Wooldridge in the 69th minute. She took a pass from Victoria Bahr, dribbled into the right side of the goal box and scored when her shot deflected off an AUM defender and into the upper portion of the goal.

AUM held off VSU for the remaining 21:03 and earned the victory on a day when they recognized 25 years of AUM women's soccer.

The Warhawks will return to play next weekend with home games against Christian Brothers on Friday at 5 p.m. and Union on Sunday at 1 p.m.
