CLEVELAND, Miss. - Adam Hanson converted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to help the AUM men's soccer team defeat Delta State, 2-1, at Delta Field on Friday.

For AUM (8-2-5, 6-2-2 Gulf South), the win was the second-straight and third in its last four overall heading into Sunday's regular-season finale at Mississippi College. The Warhawks have 20 points in the GSC standings and are in third place. They have clinched a GSC Championship quarterfinal home game next weekend.

But on Friday, Hanson started the scoring in the 13th minute by serving a corner kick into the box where Jamie Ward headed it inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.

That was the way it stood through the remainder of the opening 45 minutes before the Statesmen tied it on a Ryan Thistle goal in the 77th minute. His fourth goal of the year came on a play where AUM tried to keep the ball on the DSU side of midfield but Thistle was able ot get a 1v1 with William Blake in goal after a Warhawk defender stumbled near midfield.

With the Warhawks pressing hard to regain the lead, Hanson seized an opportunity with just under eight minutes to play when he won a race to a through ball into the box before he was taken down when a Statesmen defender and Hanson's feet got tangled up. Hanson converted the ensuing penalty kick at 81:40 for his second score of the season.

Blake and the rest of the defense made the lead stand up as he stopped four shots in the first half and only faced one on goal in the second half.

AUM will play at MC (8-4-2, 6-3-1) on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff at Longabaugh Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
