HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – William Blake made a decisive save and
Sean Keane slammed home the clinching shot to lift the AUM men's soccer team to the Gulf South Conference championship match by outlasting Christian Brothers 5-3 in penalty kicks Thursday evening.
The match officially ended in a 1-1 draw, with the Warhawks advancing via the penalty kick shootout.
AUM (10-2-6) got things started in the first half, scoring off a corner kick. The corner was rattled in by
Logan Roach in the 31
st minute for his second score of the year.
The Warhawks were able to hold the Bucs (11-3-4) scoreless in the first 45 minutes after multiple chances of their own from corner kicks. Blake, a Second-Team All-GSC goalkeeper, recorded two saves in the first half.
CBU opened up the second half with a quick goal in the 46
th minute, when AJ Agbede scored his first goal of the year. The goal was be the only score in the second half to keep the game locked even at the end of regulation.
After a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the two sides set up for penalty kicks. In the PK session, AUM received successful tries from
Benjamin Hoffman,
Adam Hanson,
Ivan Gonzalez, Roach and Keane.
Hanson led the Warhawks with eight shots, including a pair on goal. Blake collected eight official saves in the match The Warhawks recorded 25 shots with five on goal, while the Bucs had 28 with 10 on goal.
Saturday's GSC Championship match will be played at 12 p.m. at the John Hunt Complex.
