MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Kendall McCain had a career-high 24 kills and
Maya Thompson hit.438 to lead the AUM women's volleyball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Friday night.
The win allowed AUM (9-17, 6-11 Gulf South) to stay in the hunt for one of the final two conference postseason berths entering the final three matches of the regular season. The Warhawks are currently tied for eighth place and a game out of seventh.
AUM will play host to Lee (16-13, 10-7) on Saturday at the AUM Athletics Complex.
McCain, who's kill total was the third-most in AUM history and the second-highest number in the GSC this season, started her stellar night with eight kills in a 25-22 first set win for the Orange and Black.
Set 1
AUM came out on fire, holding leads of 7-1 and 15-6. Trevecca answered and eventually took a 20-19 lead. But the Warhawks got three-consecutive kills from McCain and two from
Elise Fulgham on their way to a 25-22 win. McCain paced the team to a .361 hitting pct. The Warhawks had 19 digs to keep possession and set up the offense.
Set 2
The Trojans controlled the second match for a 25-20 decision. After AUM tied the set at 7-7, Trevecca grabbed a 13-8 lead that it never relinquished. The Warhawks got to within 23-20 before Addison Cunnagin got a kill and Lily Vanbebber served an ace.
Set 3
Savannah Sebek offered up five-consecutive points to give AUM an 8-6 lead forcing a TNU time out. The Trojans then battled back from a 4-point deficit to tie it at 18. The teams then traded points until TNU claimed a 22-20 advantage, eventually claiming the set 25-22 with a .325 hitting pct. – its highest in match.
Set 4
Neither team led by more than two points over the first half of the match until the Warhawks scored three-straight for a 17-14 margin. TNU pulled to within one four times but never were able to tie it as AUM forced the final set with a 25-23 win.
Set 5
Coming off a big win in the fourth, AUM rode that momentum to an 8-5 lead before TNU regained control at 10-8. The Warhawks took advantage of a mistimed set-attack to tie it at 10. From there, Thompson took over as she had four-consecutive winners to answer each sideout from the Trojans. The Warhawks won the match 15-13 on the 21st TNU attack error of the night.
Thompson totaled 16 kills and
Greta Corrente finished with 11 kills and nine digs.
Taylor Lewis had a game-high 20 digs, while
Savannah Sebek handed out 34 assists with 18 digs.
TNU (13-16, 10-8) had four players with double-digit kills, led by Mackenzie O'Loughlin with 15 on .444 hitting.
Both teams hit .261 in the contest and AUM posted a .350 clip in the fifth.
AUM will celebrate its four departing senior-most student-athletes on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
