Youngblood, Men's Basketball Push No. 7 West Georgia to the Brink

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Senior guard Sam Youngblood poured in 29 points and the Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team pushed seventh-ranked the University of West Georgia to the brink, but three free throws and a late layup sealed a road victory for the Wolves.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Jalen Gaston rattled off 10 of the first 16 points for the Warhawks as AUM raced to a 16-7 advantage with 14:37 to play in the first half.
  • West Georgia took its first lead, 27-25, on a Zawdie Jackson layup with 5:34 left in the first 20 minutes. 
  • After a Travis Anderson jumper tied the game once again, UWG used a 17-4 sprint to take a 44-31 lead into the locker room.
  • Youngblood rattled off five three-pointers to help AUM mount a comeback and pull within one with 8:50 remaining in the game.
  • With the Wolves leading by two possessions, Youngblood found his sixth and seventh three-pointers of the night, and Jalen Gaston hit a crucial layup, to tie the contest 76-76 with 1:55 to play.
  • A trio of free throws pushed the Wolves ahead by three, and AUm was unable to connect on a tying three-point attempt as UWG held on for the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Youngblood scored six points in the first half and tallied 23 in the second half. 
  • All seven of Youngblood's three-pointers came in the second half.
  • AUM out-rebounded 39-32, but the Wolves won the points in the paint battle 40-26.
  • The Warhawks knocked down 12 three-pointers and shot 50 percent (12-of-24) from beyond the arc as a team.
  • AUM lost the turnover battle 18-8.
  • Jalen Gaston added 20 points and six rebounds, his second 20-plus point effort of the campaign.
  • West Georgia ran its win streak to 11 games.
