Softball Splits Final Day in Gulf Shores Invite

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team split the second day of the Gulf Shores Invitational with a 6-1 win over Spring Hill College and falling 6-5 against No. 18 Saint Leo University on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 1)
  • Molly Cobb and Gia Martin drove in runs in the first inning with Chloe Baynes and Faith Wheat crossing the plate to give AUM a 2-0 lead. 
  • Lexi Love brought home Martin in the third to make it a 3-0 game. 
  • Wheat had an infield single that was able to send Shelby Newsome home for another run in the fourth. 
  • Martin hit her first homer of the season in the fifth inning to give AUM a 5-0 lead. 
  • Cobb secured her second RBI of the game with a single to right field that brought home Kat Fallen for AUM's sixth run. 
  • Spring Hill scored a run in the seventh, but that was all they could get as AUM won 6-1.
ON THE MOUND (GM 1)
  • Morgan Ferguson worked six innings and allowed no runs on two hits. She struck four batters out.
  • Chelisa Newsome tossed the seventh inning and struck a batter out, allowing one run. 
NOTABLES
  • Wheat tallied four hits and had one run batted in. 
  • Cobb and Martin drove in two runs each. 
  • Chelisa Newsome made her first appearance as a Warhawk.

HIGHLIGHTS (GM 2)
  • Saint Leo struck first in the bottom half of the third inning with a pair of runs. 
  • Cobb flew out to right field, but it brought home Baynes as AUM got a run back on the Lions in the fourth inning. 
  • Saint Leo responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. 
  • AUM gained some momentum in the fifth frame as Rebecca Komers and Whitney Wells hit solo shots to left field to bring AUM within two runs. 
  • Saint Leo scored an additional run on a passed ball in the fifth frame to make it 6-3. 
  • The Warhawks added a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but could not find the game-tying run and Saint Leo took the victory. 
ON THE MOUND (GM 2)
  • Alanna Goble logged four innings and gave up five runs on seven hits. 
  • Avery Dickerson came in relief to work the final two frames and gave up a pair of hits and struck two out. She allowed one run. 
UP NEXT

AUM is back in action Friday, February 9 against Saint Anselm College and Florida Tech in the first day of the Panther Invitational in Longwood, Florida. The first game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
