Softball Punches Ticket To NCAA Division II World Series With Thrilling Victory Over MC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II World Series with a thrilling 6-5 victory over the No. 2 seed Mississippi College on Wednesday afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Chloe Derrick drove in the first run of the day with a RBI-single to center field that scored Gia Martin as the Warhawks took a 1-0 lead. 
  • In the fourth inning, the Choctaw bats came to life as they scored three runs on five hits to take a 3-1 lead. 
  • They extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, which gave them a 4-1 lead. 
  • AUM began a rally in the top of the sixth frame as Gia Martin and Chloe Derrick both got on base. Whitney Wells came in to pinch run for Derrick and a single from Margaret Morgan crossed Martin to make it 4-2, but Wells was out on the play. 
  • Lexi Love came in to pinch-hit in the top of the sixth and she delivered with a two-RBI single that scored Shelby Newsome and Lexie Bullock to even the game at 4-4. 
  • The Choctaws regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth off a RBI single that made it 5-4. 
  • AUM's last chance to bat was in the top of the seventh and another rally began as Haley Ann Frank hit an infield single to get on base. Kat Fallen drew a walk and with two runners on and two outs in the inning, Derrick struck a single to center field that scored Frank to even the score at 5-5. 
  • Newsome singled to center field and was able to score Faith Wheat, who was pinch running for AUM to take the 6-5 lead. 
  • Alanna Goble came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh and three fly outs in a row ended the game.
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Brinkley Yevak got the start and worked the first 3.1 innings and gave up three runs on five hits. She struck out two batters. 
  • Chelisa Newsome (W, 7-2) earned the win in relief allowing two earned runs on five hits and Goble (S, 1) earned the save in the bottom of the seventh.

"What an amazing come back from our team today," head softball coach Scottie Wilkes said. "The resilience that they showed and continue to show amazes me. Today was a total team effort and I am so proud of them. Time to go win a National Championship!"

UP NEXT

The Warhawks will play in the NCAA Division II World Series and will learn game information at a later time.
