Softball Begins NCAA Division II Championships As No. 1 Seed

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Auburn University at Montgomery was named the No. 1 seed in the 2024 NCAA Division II Softball National Championships on Thursday afternoon and will begin the tournament on Sunday, May 19 against the No. 8 seed Lenoir-Rhyne University at 10 a.m. (CT) at Boombah-Soldiers Creek Park. 

The Warhawks are 46-12 after winning the NCAA Division II South Regional Championship against the No. 2 seed Mississippi College this past week. AUM si making their second appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball Championships. The Bears travel south from Hickory, North Carolina and own a 50-16 overall record after earning the Southeast Regional Championship against the 2023 National Champions University of North Georgia. 

AUM is led by Chloe Baynes who owns a team-high in batting average at .466 and hits and is currently at 95 this season. She has scored 74 runs and stolen 34 bases. Haley Ann Frank has 78 hits during her junior campaign and has scored 59 runs. 

Senior first basemen Kat Fallen has a batting average of .364 and has 49 runs scored and driven in 73 runs on 63 hits. Fallen has hit 13 home runs. Gia Martin has hit 20 homers and is up to 55 in her career. Martin has the most homers of any player in the tournament. 

In the circle for AUM, Alanna Goble was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Year and is 20-3 overall and owns an ERA of 2.15. She has tossed 18 complete games and struck out 143 batters. Brinkley Yevak is 9-2 this year and  has an ERA of 2.97, while freshman Chelisa Newsome carries an ERA of 2.84 into the World Series.

THE FIELD
  • The NCAA Division II Softball Championships features two pods with the Warhawks being the No. 1 overall seed. They are joined by No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne University (Southeast Regional), No. 4 University of Indianapolis (Midwest Region), and No. 5 University of Charleston (Atlantic Region). 
  • On the other side of the bracket is No. 2 University of Texas at Tyler (South Central Region), No. 3 Wilmington (East Region), No. 6 Western Washington (West Region), and No. 7 Augustana (Central Region). 
  • The winners of the pods will advance to the championship series on May 24-25.
