Softball Rallies Late To Defeat West Florida In GSC Tournament

OXFORD, Ala. -- The Auburn University at Montgomery scored five unanswered runs to take down University of West Florida 6-4 on Thursday afternoon at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Alabama in the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • West Florida scored a pair of runs in the first inning off of a pair of AUM errors. 
  • Gia Martin trimmed the UWF lead to one run in the top of the second inning off of a solo home run. 
  • Bella Holliday hit a batted in a run with a single up the middle in the third inning to make it 3-1. 
  • AUM began to rally in the fifth inning with Rebecca Komers hitting a single to left center field and scoring Shelby Newsome to make it 3-2 and Chloe Baynes batted in Lexie Bullock to even the score at 3-3. 
  • Haley Ann Frank hit an infield single and scored Komers to give the Warhawks a 4-3 lead. 
  • In the sixth inning, AUM added another run as Shelby Newsome drove in Kat Fallen to go up 5-3. 
  • In the seventh inning Komers hit her seventh home run of the season with a solo shot to center field. 
  • West Florida's Holliday hit a single up the middle to score one run in the bottom of the seventh inning. UWF got the bases loaded and a pop out to Martin ended the game as AUM secured the win. 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Chelisa Newsome (W, 6-1) earned the win in her second complete game of the season. She struck out seven batters and allowed four total runs with two being earned on eight hits.

"Our team was relentless today," head coach Scottie Wilkes said. "I am proud of them for that. It was a hard fought win and a big time win." 

UP NEXT

The Warhawks advance in the winner's bracket in the GSC Championships and will take on the winner of game 10 on Friday, May 3 at Choccolocco Park at 6 p.m. in Oxford, Alabama. Game 10 will be played on Friday, May 3 at 12:30 p.m.
